Hurdles to Faith - Routine

This Sunday we continue our conversation about those things that get in the way of maximizing our Faith. I have found that some of the biggest hurdles are masquerading as solutions. I hear people say, I need to add prayer to my routine or I need to get in the habit of looking for God but what is hidden in these statements is the belief that you can program God into your day. I don't know how to tell some of you this, but it ain't your day...it's his...and the question lingers, are we fitting into His day? Another pitfall of routine is that we can turn something sacred into something rote and thus rob a divine moment of its power. Maybe the reason our faith doesn't grow is because we keep trying to make it fit into our routine.

Intimacy with God

This week we take a break from our "Hurdles to Faith" series as we hear from Dr. David Campbell. Here are his thoughts..."Intimacy with God can be a challenge for even the most faithful individual. The Holy Scriptures are full of language and metaphors that help us understand the nature and character of God, however there is one genre of near ancient eastern Jewish culture that when properly understood can help lead to greater Intimacy with God". Hurdles to Faith -- Safety

This Sunday we begin a series that will lead us into the Advent Christmas season. Last Spring, I read Mark Batterson's book "Wild Goose Chase", which spoke about the power of the Holy Spirit and being sensitive to it. The whole time I kept thinking about the hurdles we have to being "all in" with our faith. For example, what keeps us from living out Simple Christmas, what keeps us from being spiritual beings in our community and not just Sunday morning Christians, what keeps us from living out a sacrificial faith instead of a comfortable faith. This Sunday we are going to look at the issue of Safety, which I believe has become an obstacle to living dangerously for Christ. Romans 12, tells us that we are capable of being transformed...what's the hurdle in your life keeping that from becoming a reality?

Did You Call? Who Really Matters (Oct 4, 2009)

Did You Call: Who Really Matters-So we come to the end of Jonah and we discover Jonah is not a story about a Whale or about a great battle between believers and unbelievers or even a story about Nineveh because Nineveh could be anywhere...it's a story about Grace. The bottom line is that Jonah wants Grace for himself but not for Nineveh...he wants everyone else to get justice while he receives mercy. Are we any different, do we consciously or unconsciously decide who really matters? So chapter 4 provides an exchange between an angry Jonah and a compassionate God. We discover that God has one more teachable moment...join us and see if it...also applies to you?

Did You Call? Redial (Sept 27, 2009)

As a kid did you ever find yourself sitting in class when the teacher asked a question and immediately you made a pact with God to serve orphans in Bangladesh if she didn't call on you? Right now some of you just got a shiver up your spine...and when she didn't call on you...you thought "man I dodged that one", except she asked another question...and now Bangladesh is waiting. Listen some of us fail to answer God's call and act like he doesn't have a redial button. Throughout Christianity it is unexplainable why God chooses some of the ones he does...and its equally hard for us to believe that some of us could be the answers to someone else's prayers. However strange this may be, it is the Christian reality! This Sunday we will look at God's persistence and what is happening while we get the second call.

Desperate for God

Whether we are running from God or simply find ourselves adrift from the center of his will there will be a time in the midst of "not being where we are supposed to be" that we WILL need God. I find that when people are going down and the circumstances of their life are a mess they will seek counsel from many places...but it is desperation that causes us to finally call out to God. God calls us to seek him and to search for him and he will be found...why is it that we wait so long to seek him? God is calling us to not only Go...but also to Come!

Did You Call? Resisting God

What do you do when God calls you? You see its not a matter of "IF" but of "WHEN" God calls...so how will we respond. This Sunday we begin a new series studying the book of Jonah and specifically looking at this issue of His call and our responses. What I know for certain is that each of us at one time or another resists God's call, we deflect, we deny and we even derail the plans God has for us. We do this for many reasons and some of them are found in the person of Jonah who despite being a Prophet did not want to go where God was calling him to go.

Christianity: A Story of Before and After

I love those infomercials with the people that have Before and After experiences...mostly because I want to be one of those after pictures. It occurs to me that our Spiritual life should have a Before and After picture too! There should be the picture of us before Jesus and then a picture of what we are after our encounter with Christ. I think the question we should ask ourselves is... could anyone tell the difference in our Before and After picture?

A few weeks ago I preached on Martha as a secondary note to us needing a Mary...well it drove all the Martha's from their task driven closets screaming it is I that am "worried and anxious about many things!" So I thought maybe we ought to have a word on being worried.

Everybody needs a Place

We have spent the last 11 weeks talking about the people we need in our life as we journey down the Kingdom Road. The reality is that we also need a Place, a place to refuel, a place to serve, a place to be still, a place to heal...we need a "place to belong and a place to become". In this sermon we review the tribes as part of the place to Belong; and all those that have never joined a tribe can do that and those who want to change their tribe will have that opportunity as well. Then we will talk about Becoming, which is what happens when we put our faith into action beyond this place.

As we journey spiritually we will from time to time face some Giants and there are constantly things and people out there that could cause us to stumble and fall...in these times you've got to have someone who watches your back. Anyone who leads anything, a business, a family or a ministry will find that every once in a while someone is going to take a shot at you...rarely do you see it coming! What we all need is someone to tell us when to duck. This Sunday we will look at Deborah and the way she models our need to have someone watch our backs.

Everyone Needs a Barnabas (August 2, 2009)

Have you ever been having one of those days where you thought if the next person crosses me they might get to meet Jesus face to face? Or how about a day when you are just blue and blah, motivation is low, enthusiasm for life is pushing empty? And then, someone comes along, maybe a stranger, maybe a friend and unexpectedly they pick you up, someone encourages you, points out why God has you here! Is there really any better feeling? If we are going to make it down the Kingdom road we need encouragement from time to time...we need a Barnabas! Join us Sunday as we look at the ways we encounter Barnabas and the ways we can be a vessel of encouragement to someone else.

Everyone Needs a Zacchaeus (July 26, 2009)

The Bible tells a story of a wee little man, a story that we have minimized by making it a children's sing-along. Zacchaeus was an outsider, he was a fringe guy and he was despised. Could it be that he climbed a tree because no one would make room for him along the road? He is the least likely guy anyone would want to hang out with and especially if you were religious. And yet Jesus seeks him out! It seems to me that as we cross into the Kingdom we tend to avoid people like this and yet...Jesus seeks him out! Why do we need a Zacchaeus in our life...join us Sunday as we look at the first of the Eleven that can't give us anything...or do they?

Everybody Needs a Peter/Paul (July 12, 2009)

Everybody Needs a Paul or a Peter- What this means is that we all need a Mentor; someone to pour themselves into us and to shape us into men and women that become difference makers. There is a great Greek proverb that states, "A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they will never sit in". I think this best describes the work of Peter and Paul. I love this quote because it reflects the value we talk about at Georgianna... to pursue a life of being "other" driven. The truth is we are easily influenced, whether for good or bad, for destructiveness or for life...we are constantly being shaped. This Sunday we will talk about our need for a spiritual shaper someone who helps us understand the value of staying on the Kingdom road.

Everyone Needs a Timothy (July 5, 2009)

Our focus this week is on 1 & 2 Timothy. I don't know about you but I see Timothys' all around us. You would have to try really hard not to have a Timothy in your life. But the question is not whether you have a Timothy in your life, the question is are you engaging them? Do you have a relationship with your Timothy? Is it an inconvenience? Do you even want one? What would this relationship even look like? When looking at these two letters from Paul we are looking into a deep relationship between an older Paul and a young man Timothy. This is not a get together on the weekend type friendship. The more you study the letters the more you seethat this relationship is rooted in Christ and Christ's calling. They are so close they experience "tears" when they are apart. Timothy is young and has some confidence issues. He is tired, burned out, and questioning his qualifications. And this is where their relationship comes alive. Paul does not tell Timothy to "Man up", "suck it up", or "learn on your own". Paul encourages Timothy by helping him realize God's gifts and God's power in him. He's not trying to make a clone of himself but encourages Timothy to grow into his own person. Paul encourages Timothy to fulfill his ministry. Paul is pouring his life into Timothy. Paul knows the impact of discipleship. Paul is passing IT on. How does this story carry over to us? A few questions to think about. Who is your Timothy? Who is your Paul? What is your ministry? 2 Tim 4:1-8 and 1 Tim 4:6-16

Everyone Needs a Jethro (June 28, 2009)

This Sunday we will look at the reality that everyone needs a butt-kicker in their life. Someone who gets you to turn the heat up...who motivates you to be all you can be. A Jethro will always bless you forward, they help you see where you are going a little more clearly. In the day when Moses took on leading the people of Israel out of Egypt...he finds himself overwhelmed (I know that NEVER happens to any of us) and who shows up but his Father-in-law...would we see that as a blessing? Wisdom comes from the outside...I think how reluctant we are to have an outsider give us input...but it may be just what we need. Exodus 18:13-26

Who is your BFF? If you don't know what this means you are part of a rare group of people that does not have a texting addiction. The old school equivalent is... who is your best friend forever. It seems ridiculous to preach on the need to have a friend be a part of the eleven people you need in your life... or is it. What makes a Biblical friend and how is it different from the need we have for a Nathan? The Bible gives us a picture of a true friend in the person of Jonathon. Jonathon is the son of David's rival...is also David's closest friend. 1 Samuel 14:6-14, 1 Samuel 18:1-4, and John 15:13-15
