This week, as we continue through our BATTLE PLAN series, we are going to take a closer look into part of the title- PLANS. OUR plans. What does God say about tomorrow and how we should approach it? Now, I just want to go ahead and get this out of the way. James doesn't say that it is wrong to write things down on our calendars. There is nothing wrong with making vacation plans, having dreams, setting goals.
I think we should know where we are headed and have an idea of how we are getting there. It is not foolish to plan, but it is foolish to leave God out when making those plans and when working to achieve them. This week we will look at how to make plans with a Godly perspective.

Battle Plan: Submission - God's Standard

In the world of preaching, this weeks passage is theological gold! It is a deep vein of truth that was spot on 2000 years ago, and is so amazingly relevant today. We live in a world of ever-increasing conflict and cyber courage has only made it worse. There are times that we have been wronged that cause us to cry out for justice, but honestly most of what I see is conflict generated by selfishness; someone not getting what they wanted. Everywhere I go people are angry and they are trying to solve it by yelling at people. How's that working out for us? I was so naive when I first got into ministry, I thought that marriage counseling was just a matter of helping people understand what is at stake and helping them unite to face the world together. Surely reasonable people, who at one time claimed "Love" as the reason for their marriage, would easily capitulate to reason. Some of you are laughing right now! Seriously I discovered that marriage counseling is like a UFC octagon and that people are looking for a referee. Honestly, I was shocked at how deeply we could hurt other people. I've never been a big fan of the word "compromise", as it feels like everyone loses. It's like irrational optimism. I prefer "unified tension", which identifies the goal for the greater good of all and then moves towards it sacrificially. Georgianna has proven what we can accomplish when we are clear about the destination. Under the command of Jesus, everyone sets down their agendas and pulls together to achieve feeding hungry kids, loving orphans, building churches, and many other ways to serve. Sunday our passage will demonstrate the 4 C's of Conflict: the Condition, the Cause, the Cure, and the Cautions. Join us Sunday as again James speaks right to us today!

Battle Plan: Wisdom from heaven

Wisdom is the virtue that everyone is sure they have, and no one seems to realize is actually missing until you are buried under foolishness. Every decision we make has an attached destination, and wisdom is the map. I believe Wisdom is a combination of Intentionality (looking or seeking), Patience (waiting) and Influence of others (learning). I believe we are a by-product of all our choices, why is it we are always surprised when we wake up one day and we don't like where we are, and even more confused about how we got there? Wisdom is a big deal because every choice pre-decides our future. I have said to people of all ages, show me the people you hang out with, the books you're reading, the songs you're singing, the person who has your ear and I will show you the person you will become in 5 years. James makes it clear there is earthly wisdom and then there is Heavenly wisdom. One leads to death the other leads to life. I believe there are many times throughout our life that Wisdom is critical; when it relates to God, when it relates to marriage, when it relates to having children, when it relates to choosing a vocation, when it relates to our time management. These are a few areas where I see a lack of wisdom have long term consequential impact. The fact is there aren't many areas of life that Wisdom, or the lack thereof won't influence. I look forward to being back in the pulpit as we again hear a practical word for spiritual living from the guy who initially missed it.

Battle Plan: Taming the Tongue

Words are powerful, they can bless, or they can curse; build up or burn down. James uses some powerful examples to illustrate the disproportionate influence the tongue has over the whole body. The tongue is tiny but powerful and can set the course
of individuals and nations.
James seems to be urging us to get control over our tongues. For an unguarded tongue can cause great destruction. Yet, he also speaks of the absolute human incapacity to tame the tongue. Isn't this a contradiction?

For the last several weeks we have been talking about the necessary "Foundations" in our spiritual life in order to build a faith that will last through the trials of this world. I do believe that there are things that can crack our foundations causing it to fall all around us and that primary thing, is a Divided Heart! It's like having one foot in the world and one in the Kingdom. Hope you can do the splits because these 2 things are moving away from each other all the time. Can you imagine what Deedie might think if I had a divided heart in our marriage? If I wasn't all in but split time with her and ESPN, or her and my hobbies (fact is I have no hobbies) or her and the Deli lady at Publix who knows how I like my Pub-Sub. Ridiculous right? But people do it all the time, and we for sure do it with God all the time. There are some things that require an Undivided Heart, and our relationship with God is one of those. We should be pursuing holiness in a way that puts our sin and the temptations of the world in the rear view mirror. Loyalty is a big deal to God...it was rule 1 in the big list, remember...you will have no other Gods before me. In other words...NO DIVIDED HEART! (That was me shouting at us). Foundations: The Spirit Comes with Fire
As we continue our "Foundations" series we turn our attention to the Power and Work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, what I call the "IT" factor of our spiritual life is the off forgotten party of the Holy Trinity. It's often a case of out of sight, out of mind. When we do acknowledge it, we often don't know how to describe it. Wouldn't it be nice if we could just say, May The Force Be With You! Somebody ought to make a movie about that. The fact is the Holy Spirit is the burning influence of God's holiness. Did you know that in order for water to become steam it must be heated to 212 degrees Fahrenheit? In other words, in order for it to be transformed it must be heated up. The Spirit comes with fire, so that we might be transformed! Despite our inability to articulate well the power of the Spirit, the Bible is full of examples and expressions of its presence. In fact, Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit is left in his place as our helper. I frequently say that I never want to get ahead of the leading of the Spirit, which means then that I have to be constantly aware of "IT" and where "IT" is. The question we need to answer in terms of the foundation we are building is...do we have "It"? Join us Sunday as we pursue the power of the Spirit together!

Foundations Anchored in scriptures

he word of God is under attack in America and from a very unlikely source...The Mainstream American Church. In many corners of American Christianity, the authority of scripture is being replaced with personal experience and cultural standards. Sadly, it is church leaders and pastors who are driving this un-holy agenda. I believe it to be the work of the enemy that gets us to buy into the lie that we can pretend God didn't say what he said, or mean what he meant when he said it. Scripture is the revelation of God and his will for our life. It is the story of our redemption from sin and the restoration of God as our Father through Jesus Christ. Scripture is an anchor for our soul, so that we are not adrift in a world of cultural pluralism. The word of God IS our firm foundation for how we live our life for God and love one another. Scripture is our accountability and our inspiration. It is a book of hope and God's love story with his creation. Somewhere along the line we have traded sound teaching of scripture for sound bites from culture! I think it is a dangerous game to think we can minimize the importance of scripture in our spiritual lives. Scripture is the non-negotiable truth for the people of God. Foundations: When Jesus is Lord

I need to confess right up front that this is one of those topics that I am super passionate about (consider yourself warned). I've said it hundreds of times, I don't meet anyone who doesn't want a Savior, I just meet very few people that want Jesus to be Lord. In other words, everyone wants to be rescued, saved, delivered...but they would just soon not submit, surrender or bow down. The fact is we have a love/hate relationship with authority. We like it when we have it, and hate it when someone else does. The Lordship of Jesus Christ is all about, surrender, submission and the authority of Christ. Remember, it's Jesus who said we must pick up our cross daily and DENY ourselves in order to follow him. Why is denying ourselves such a big hurdle to spiritual obedience? Jesus is either Lord of ALL or he is not Lord at ALL. In the 1st century to declare "Jesus as Lord" was downright dangerous. These 3 simple words could get you killed, because only Caesar was Lord. So here we are in 2019 trying to live unashamed for Jesus but what have we declared our allegiances to? Trust me our foundations will surely crumble if we have built it on anything other than the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Join us Sunday as we continue to pour a solid foundation for our faith.

Foundations: Seeking Discipleship

The winter wedding tour (3 in 3 weeks) has concluded, and I'm baaaaaack! So grateful for Nathan and Janice whose sermons were outstanding. So, to this Sunday, I believe if we are going to live a life Unashamed for Jesus as we have declared, then we are going to have to be crystal clear about what we are building this one and only life on. Jesus makes it clear you can build your life on his words and commands or you can choose to disregard them, but the consequences are significant. We will reap what we sow 100% of the time. Isn't it interesting that we give so much attention to the outside, what others can see and so little emphasis on what can't be seen? Our health is a great example, we can put expensive clothes and shoes on a body we don't take care of. Or take our homes, we can fill them with leather furniture and endless throw pillows (only if you are married because no respectable single guy has throw pillows) and never think about what you're standing on. So, this Sunday I want us to look at a foundational principal of Christianity, and that is are we actually seeking discipleship? Are we actually trying to be like Jesus, are we taking his commands seriously, are we seeking truth or some version of it that supports what we want our lifestyle to be? Could it be that the church has been so focused on making members that we have forgotten that Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples? Do we know the difference? I think it's a matter of how bad do we want it?

Unashamed: In the waiting

We finish up our Unashamed series this Sunday with this great story from the Gospel of Mark. It's really two stories in one. Jesus, on his way to heal the dying daughter of Jairus, a synagogue leader, encounters this unnamed woman who has been subject to a bleeding disorder for twelve years. Her perpetual bleeding makes her unclean and therefore a social outcast.

Clean or unclean, she is determined to get to Jesus, whom she believes can free her of her suffering. Not only does Jesus provide healing, but he gives her a new identity, calling her "daughter", a faith-filled child of God.
And while Jairus waits and watches, news comes
to him that his daughter is dead.

Have you ever been in a situation where you had to wait and watch while others received their miracles on the way to receiving yours?

Have you ever felt like the miracle that you had longed for, hoped for, was dead and there was no reason to bother Jesus with it anymore?

Before I begin, I just have to say that I love this series about being Unashamed. I think it is a sobering look at reality, at the state of the church, at the state of Christians, and I think it is causing us to take a good look at ourselves and assess if we are in the battle, if we are even ready for battle, and if we are truly the church as Christ has called us to be. Now when I talk about battles, I know it is easy to get this viewpoint that it is us vs. the world, and I think that is how a majority of people see it. But we have a different enemy and often our biggest battles are not against the world but against our own sin, our own flesh. And often it is easier to fight the world than to battle our own sinful nature. It makes me wonder often, am I fighting for God or against God? I know that no one wants to think for a second that they are fighting with God, but often we are, without even knowing it. This week we will look at the tower of Babel, and the rebellion that took place there to determine if we are truly following the will of God or our own.

Unashamed: It's a Great Time to be a Christian
Well if you have been with us the last couple of weeks, the title of this sermon feels a little counter-intuitive to what you may have heard. For sure we are living in the age of unbelief, and the era of Christendom in our country is fading into obscurity, but Jesus is still on the throne. In Matthew 9 Jesus tells us that the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few! Proportionally this may be every bit as true today, as it was when Jesus said it when there weren't but a few hundred followers. At Georgianna we have made a commitment to relational evangelism, sharing our life in order to share Christ. We feel this is the most supported Biblical approach to sharing what we love. Living a life unashamed for Jesus means that we need to be living his life abundantly, out in full view for others to see. The way we do this is to be confident in our convictions ( what we believe) and compassionate in our actions (what we actually do). Done well, both of these honor Christ. So, I really do believe this is the best time to be a Christian because even non-believers know something is wrong in the world and they know they are helpless to fix it. So while they may reject institutional religion they are open to anything that might offer them hope!

Unashamed: Finding Courage
Last Sunday we set our vision for 2019 as a year of being dedicated to living Unashamed. Unashamed of Jesus, Unashamed of our faith, and Unashamed of sharing him with others. I think in order for us to live a spiritual life that is not ashamed of Jesus, it will require great courage. This seems odd in a country where being a follower of Jesus will not generally cost you your life or have you jailed. Sadly, in American Christianity we are super image conscious and want to be seen going with the flow. The problem with this is that from its inception Christianity was counter-cultural, it was intended to go against the flow. The big problem in the American church as I see it is that there are people who claim the name but can't commit to being fully in the game. The truth is none of us will ever be courageous if our convictions are based on people's perception of us instead of playing to an audience of one. I don't meet anyone who couldn't use a little more courage, so join us Sunday as we encourage one another in becoming Unashamed!

For the last 14 years we have chosen a word or phrase to guide us collectively as one body throughout the year. Last year our word was "Prayer" and we established the historic sanctuary as a house of prayer and will carry this weekly community discipline forward in the coming year. Without fail this year's vision is a word that God has put on my heart and reinforced through times of prayer and fasting. The scriptures tell us "where there is no vision the people perish." A lack of vision leads to spiritual wandering and wandering leads to apathy. I feel like the last thing any of us need to be doing is retreating in our walk with God. I am super excited about this year's word for us. It will simultaneously define the relationship we have with Jesus, and measure our obedience to his commands and God's word. We also will be giving out a 2019 devotional guide to all who come Sunday to begin your year. We are especially excited about this year's devotional as it was written and published in house. So, join us Sunday as we begin 2019 by pouring a solid foundation for which we can stand tall for our faith in the coming year. Happy New Year Georgianna.

Church, we live in a nation and a world that is parched. People just seem to be dried out from the heat of loneliness, financial woes, family strife, relational / family of origin tensions and an increasing number of people who struggle with addictions. Why is it that during the holidays those problems seem to be intensified?

For many of us the holidays are filled with joy and celebration but clearly this is not the case for everyone. There's probably no greater opportunity than this time of year to pour living water into people who are thirsty. Pastor Corky frequently speaks about "Living Water." The water he challenges us each week to pour into others.

Have you ever wondered what this living water is and where it comes from? Do you think that if we better understood where this water comes from we might become better at pouring it into others? What is the outcome of drinking this water?

No surprise, Jesus answers all these questions for us. It is my desire on this visit to pour living water into you! I want you to come for worship, take a deep breath, rest and bless me with the opportunity to pour God's word over you and into you. I want to give you an opportunity during this season of joy, peace, and hope to draw water from the Well of Salvation.

Pastor Corky is going to return in one week. He will waste no time setting your sights on 2019. He will challenge you to continue to pour living water into your family, your church, your community, and the places in the world where we serve. So it is my desire for you on this day to have you drink from the Well of Salvation but only as
preparation for pouring yourself into 2019.

During this time of year, we are supposed to reflect on the birth of Jesus and what it means to us. I know that gets lost most of the time in everything else that Christmas has come to mean, but even when we do reflect on this amazing gift, this new covenant with God, it is difficult to grasp what it meant at the time. When we sing songs like "O Holy Night" or "Silent Night" we tend to get an image of peace. Peace is often paired with quiet, and I think that we have come to believe that silence is synonymous with peace. But in Israel, there had been many quiet nights before the birth of Jesus that provided no peace. God had been silent for 400 years. No prophets to proclaim, no word from the Lord. And it is into this desperate silence that Jesus is born. This Sunday, we will look into why God was silent and what Jesus came to do about it.

No other time do we see this more than the weeks leading up to Christmas. With Christmas parties, shopping, traveling and cooking... It's easy to lose sight of the foundational truths of Christmas. That Jesus Christ came into this world to set the captives free and that one day He'll come again. How free do you feel this Christmas? Are you ready for Him to come again? This Sunday, we'll be unpacking an untraditional passage for Advent. We'll be going through Daniel 5 - The Writing on the Wall. We'll be using this passage to challenge ourselves to draw in near to Him this Christmas. It's my prayer, that we don't miss the "writing on the wall." Manger Manipulation

Maybe it's just me, but it seems the way that the church and
most Christians do Christmas makes a statement that the
way God did it must have been wrong. l like we rearrange the manger, we focus more on gift bearing wise men than humble shepherds. It feels like to me that American Christmas is just
manger manipulation. I worry sometimes that Jesus has become just another church prop at Christmas. The word Christmas (Christ-Mas) is Latin for "More Christ". Do our Christmas's have more Christ or is it more of some other "C" words, like consumerism, commercialism and chaos! In order for Christ to become more, certainly it means something has got to become less. This is the heart behind "Simple Christmas" a way of celebrating Jesus that cuts through all the clutter and keeps Jesus in the center of it all. I have said for years the only benefit of Advent is that it would force us to pre-decide the kind of Christmas we desire. Join us this Sunday as we begin our season of preparation for God's grand celebration!

Prayer As Intimacy

Intimacy. We have taken it upon ourselves as Americans to redefine intimacy and we have created it to be something that God never intended. So, how would you define intimacy? If you had a 3x5 note card and you could write down the definition, what would you write? Would it be influenced by Hollywood and how they have sexualized our culture? Would you define intimacy using feelings? Would you make it about proximity and how close or distant you are from someone? Would trust be a factor in whether or not you are intimate with someone? We would have lots of different answers that define one word that is very near and dear to God, our intimate relationship with Him! Just so you know, it is impossible to hide from God. We try, but He knows our thoughts and our words before they are even spoken. We are fully known by God! Often times we treat him as a stranger so that we can avoid being vulnerable before him. Prayer is the only way we can become intimate with God. Prayer is the one way we can build a trusted relationship with Him. It is all about surrendering ourselves and bending our knee in prayer. So come this Sunday and draw near to God. Surrender your hearts and step into true intimacy with the God of the universe. The one true God who created each one of us uniquely to have a deep and intimate relationship with Him. See you Sunday!

Prayer As Awe

So as I have been immersed in all things prayer this year, I have begun to wonder if familiarity has caused us to lose sight of the Awe and Wonder of God? Do our prayers reflect the magnitude of who God is, what God has done, and what God continues to do in the midst of an avalanche of worldly sinfulness. Have we become so familiar with God that we now take him for granted? I began to think that in our over-stimulated cyber driven world in which we live in, are we no longer impressed by the wonder of God's creation? Have we settled for avatars of reality or cheap knock-offs of divine experiences? Do our prayers reflect J.O.Y. ? Jesus first, Others second, and You last? So many of our prayers treat God like he is a cosmic Butler or a divine Concierge. When was the last time we hit the pause button and looked around at the world in which God has created and thought about giving thanks for the creator. If you asked me what I thought was missing most in our spiritual experiences, it would be the loss of awe and wonder in our daily lives. It's not that awe and wonder do not exist, it's that we fly right by it and miss all the beauty around us. So join us Sunday as we continue to look at prayer from every angle.

Prayer As Sanctuary

I want to first share with you how grateful I am for Janice's sermon last week. I truly believe that it was an anointed word from God for all of us, and if you missed I want to encourage you to go to the website and give it a listen. I am more of a charge the hill, rise up, get going, don't ever retreat kind of preacher, and my prayer life reflects this most frequently. What I am not so good at is slowing down, being still, sitting in silence, being contemplative. This means preaching on prayer as Sanctuary is harder for me in general. Listen, it's not because I have never experienced or for that matter needed prayer as a vehicle for Sanctuary, it's just not the vehicle I choose first. So the first four sermons in this series saw prayer as being on the offense; preparation, deliverance, being on fire, and warfare. These last three will be more of looking at prayer through a lens of pausing, seeking solitude with God amidst uncertainties and trials. More looking up than looking out. Sanctuary is meant to be and should be a safe place in the Kingdom for us to bare our souls. In the Old Testament days, you could not be touched in the sanctuary, it was a shelter from harm. I believe prayer as Sanctuary allows you to experience the cover of God, his protection and his comforting presence. It's a place to go when your afraid, when your confused, when your uncertain, when your running from the enemy. I believe eventually we all will need prayer as sanctuary. Prayer as Warfare

Most days our life seems far removed from any war zone. We drink our morning coffee, go to work, check off our to-do list, gather around the kitchen table for dinner, watch our favorite shows and head off to bed.

But the Bible describes a much different scene taking place all around us, in the unseen, spiritual world. God makes it clear, through His Word, that there is a constant battle raging all around us. Spiritual forces of evil at work in the realm of darkness, whose main objective is to ruin our life, thwart the plan of God and stop the advancement of His Kingdom.

The Bible names a real and present foe to our faith, the devil! He prowls around like a roaring lion seeking to destroy everything good in our life: our family, our marriage, our reputation, our integrity and our witness. And he does it in such a cunning way that we credit the blame to people we know, care about and love.

But take heart! The Bible also makes it clear that there is nothing about the enemy that indicates he should or will win the day. The devil is a defeated foe, and through Christ, we have been provided with more spiritual power than we are up against! Jesus is the One who is seated far above all rule and authority, all power and dominion; and all authority on heaven and earth has been given to him!

Join us Sunday as we learn how to engage our most powerful weapon of this spiritual war; communication with the One who reins victorious, PRAYER!

Prayer as life on fire

It's interesting to me that the further away we get from that personal moment of salvation from sin, the less passionate most Christians are about their faith. Time in truly erodes awareness of. I think the thing that keeps us from having a "Life on Fire" for Jesus is a disconnected prayer life. It's not frequent enough, fervent enough, faithful enough. Look, we are passionate about the things that mean the most to us, it's a simple truth that reveals a hidden reality. This reality is that our passionate life for Christ should be in full view to the world, people should know we are passionate about his mission to reach our community with love and grace. It is why we use terms like "All In" and "Sold Out" around here to describe the walk we are supposed to be walking. It's my desire that none of us would forget that not only have we been redeemed, but we have been redeemed with a purpose. When Paul tells us we should "pray with out ceasing" I think what he is trying to say is that we should live our life on fire. Not only should our prayer life be passionate, but it should influence our passions! I think we spend so much time asking God in prayer to give us the desires of our hearts, instead of asking him to help our hearts burn with greater desire for him!

PRAYER AS DELIVERANCE

This Sunday we look at the one aspect of prayer we share most in common with both our believing and non-believing neighbors...the Prayer of Deliverance. I really do believe this is the most common type of prayer uttered by all people. As I said last week, there are no atheists in foxholes. The fact is that for some people it is the crucible of crisis that ever drives them to pray. I mean, how many of our prayers have some aspect of, protect me, guide me, deliver me, rescue me, help me, watch over me? A great many of our prayers are cries to the Lord, which is perfectly fine as these types of prayers are littered throughout scripture. Even Jesus in the garden asked God to take from him the cup of wrath. But how often do we pray a prayer of deliverance with no expectance of him showing up? I call these "wishing well" prayers! The truth is all of us will need to be delivered even if it is just from our sin alone. I also believe we will all need Jesus, just better to know him before you need him. I always marvel at people who pray for deliverance and then attribute their rescue to luck. Or the person who prays for deliverance and then isn't happy with the means God chose in deliverance, I reference the Israelites on their way out of bondage in Egypt. So this Sunday, I hope we affirm that prayers of deliverance are both common and welcomed by God. However, I do not want us to miss that the methodology of God's chosen deliverance might not look like what we wish for. After all wishing and hope are not the same thing! And yet, God's chosen method of deliverance may be the very thing God needs to be glorified through our coming victory!

Prayer As Preparation

This Sunday we start a new series on "Prayer." Increasingly I am at meetings with Pastors, which by and large are a strange bunch of folks ( I am sure other vocational groups have strange members as well, but since this is my group I just need to call it like I see it). What makes it strange is that for people in the relationship business they seem to be awkward around each other. Honestly, I don't know what drives that, maybe the fear of competition or a hesitancy to be vulnerable. Conversations tend to be shallow and often times limited to complaining about the flock. Anyway, not long ago at one of these meetings a Pastor asks me one of the three questions always asked by one pastor to another..."what are you preaching on these days?" I shared that our emphasis this year had been on prayer and that we would soon begin our second series on this topic. His response was, "I can't think of anything more boring than a series on prayer." Yes he did, he actually said that! So I have been wondering...do we think prayer is boring? Is our communication with our God, who rescued us from sin and death more duty than delight? Is our encouragement to be in prayer once a month in the historic sanctuary more guilty obligation than anticipated expectation? I really do think prayer is one of the most vital and often one of the most neglected aspects of anyone's spiritual life. I never meet anyone who says "I am crushing my prayer life", but I speak to lots of people who wish their prayer life was better. This is what the next seven weeks will be about...the practice of prayer! So I hope you will join us and begin a journey to become prayer warriors in an age of darkness.

Defiant joy Through Power

The middle ground that stands between life's challenges and eventual victory is always a road of perseverance. We have become a culture of the quick fix, the easy button approach to life and when the going gets tough more and more people just quit. It's why happiness fails to have long term sustainability, and why in this life we not only need a sustainable joy but a defiant joy. I believe that the words defiance, perseverance and endurance are all synonymous. They all have to do with staying in the game against a known resistance. If we are going to advance the cause of Christ, if we aren't going to have our "Joy" stolen, then perseverance will have to be a part of the kingdom game plan. Furthermore, I believe our cultural pursuit of comfort has caused us to minimize this personal value of perseverance, and in some cases made it a non-necessity. This is a formula for both long term failure and frustration! I want us thinking of iron sharpening iron, that we see challenges as what strengthens us to finish well! This Sunday we conclude our summer series "Shine" with a look at this aspect of the fruit of the spirit, that requires some personal responsibility. So have you ever said something to some one and you immediately wished you could take it back? Have you ever let the actions of one person influence your reactions to many others? And how is it that one person dings us and we then feel the permission to ding dozens? Self-control covers a multitude of issues, whether it's our tongue, our desires, our selfishness, our weaknesses. The thing is, the absence of it is a spiritual issue. As I say so frequently, you may not have a... (fill in the blank) issue...what you probably have is a Jesus issue. Have you ever noticed that when we fail to exercise self-control in some aspect of our life, it always seems to be some one else's fault? Why do we do that? Why do we play the blame game? What ever happened to personal responsibility? The fact is our "witness" to all things Christ, or our ability to "shine" His glory is directly connected to the spirit led self-control we demonstrate. We live in a world of cyber-courage that allows us to fling insults and criticize others without seeing the damage we cause. What if we could hit the pause button and ask...does this comment, action, activity, feeling or thought, actually glorify God and represent Christ that I claim lives inside of me? Shine: A Life of Sacrifice

It was about 700 years ago that reformer and priest Martin Luther penned these words, "A religion that gives nothing, costs nothing, and suffers nothing...is worth nothing". Probably nothing else in all of Christendom is more distorted than our understanding of sacrifice. It's hard in our comfort based culture to embrace suffering of any kind, and sacrifice is rare. I find that sacrifice is a noble virtue we want in public servants, but seems beyond our ability when its thrust upon us. For example, I haven't met anyone who doesn't want our schools to be safe, I just haven't met anyone who can agree on who should pay for it. If we are going to live the life Christ has called us to as His Disciples then there will be some sacrifice involved. Somebody is going to have to give something up in order for some one else to have. Isn't that what Jesus did? Trade his life for our sin so that we would be granted life? When people ask me why the North American church is in decline, I tell them it is the curse of the 3 C's; Comfort, Convenience and Complacency. Here is my driving passion; I want the church to be here for my grandchildren, and I know that won't happen without some sacrifices. Our church is 136 years old, the doors are still open because people made sacrifices in the name of Jesus. The Kingdom doesn't advance without sacrifice, plain and simple. Join us Sunday as we look at this critical aspect of allowing our faith to shine.

Shine: A Life of Compassion

God, by his very character and nature is compassionate. And that is good news for us sinners. It is because of God's compassion that we don't always get what we deserve. And that compassion finds its
fullest expression in the Person and work of Jesus Christ.
The purpose of Jesus' earthly mission was to seek and to save that which was lost. Yet along the way, he encountered multitudes of sick and suffering people. And scripture tells us that "he healed every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people." These healings ultimately demonstrated Christ's power to free everyone, not just from physical suffering, but from the bondage, penalty and consequences of sin.
There's a well-known story in the Bible that brilliantly illustrates this. Join us Sunday as we dig deep into this Parable to see the undeniable and incomparable compassion of Christ and how he has entrusted us to continue this mission until he returns to take us all home.

Shine: A Life of Generosity

I am so excited to be back in the pulpit this Sunday. I am super grateful to Janice, Nathan, and Kelly for the last 3 weeks of amazing teaching. We really are rich in preaching talent. So you know how it is when I have been away from the pulpit, it's usually "waterboarding" preaching, so consider yourself warned! This Sunday we will be focusing on what I believe is a sweet spot for our church, a life of generosity. We have intentionally created a culture of generosity where it is never a matter of what's in your wallet, but what's in your heart that matters. Generosity is general giving on steroids, it's intended to be an overflow expression of our time and resources for the Kingdom. Generosity is to give and then some, an extra dose of time or resources. I learned recently one of the Greek words for "offering" is the word "hilarious". Now there are probably lots of ways we can interpret this, but I hope it's through the lens of joy. Deedie and I never give with a spirit of scarcity and regret, but we always give with a spirit of abundance and anticipation. There is no greater joy than when we get that we have been blessed to be a blessing. This Sunday will be all about celebrating that we understand that we who claim the name of Christ...exist to give ourselves away. Can't wait to see you Sunday.

This summer as we have moved through our series, I have been challenged, confirmed, filled with joy and reduced to tears.
This week we will look at living a Life of Endurance. I think as a culture we often see endurance as temporary and fleeting. Is it situational and circumstantial, something that we lean on when we are challenged or in seasons of turmoil? The Bible is full of examples of lives lived with endurance beyond anything we have experienced. The Apostle Paul LIVED a LIFE of endurance and he preached the Gospel despite all of the challenges he faced. He didn't give up and he didn't change his mission. Paul endured through hardship and persecution. Whether people accepted him or not. Do we have that same kind of endurance? Or is our endurance connected to an on/off switch that we use when we feel like we need a boost just to get us through. If we are honest, we are a distracted, comfortable people, content to give up when the going gets tough. God's holy word is not about giving up, but about living a life of endurance every day. LOVE, being a fruit of the spirit, is certainly an attribute that a true Christ-follower's life should be characterized by.
After all, didn't Jesus tell us that the first greatest commandment is to love God and the second greatest is to love people?
But loving people isn't always easy. They bend truths, break vows and stab backs. It can be hard to love people when they are stubborn, selfish and rude.
Could it be that this kind of relationship-saving love is not within us? Could it be that we need help from an outside source? Could it be that the first step of love is not toward them but toward HIM?

Humility is a tricky virtue, because just as soon as you think you have mastered it, you've lost it. This summer we have been talking about living the kind of life that influences others, where the light of Christ in us, shines on them. I believe this is the heart of humility, that we turn all the focus and attention away from us and onto God and others. This is really hard to do in our culture, because everything is about "me". I'll never forget the opening line to Rick Warren's best selling book, The Purpose Driven Life, which says, "it's not about you". We've said for years that we have this one and only life and it's not about us, it's about giving our life away. We are to be living sacrifices of servant-hood and this is not just hard to do if your not humble, it's impossible! Christianity is not about jockeying for position in the culture, it's about leveraging your life to transform the culture. What I love about the Gospels is that Jesus doesn't just talk the talk on this issue, he actually demonstrates an example. He doesn't give a 3-point lecture on humility, he shows us how to actually do it. Join us Sunday as we continue to pursue a life that allows us to shine.

Shine: A Life Of Peace

I don't think there is anything more confusing to an unbelieving world than the "Peace" you find in "some" Christians. Notice I said "some"? The truth is not all of us who claim the name of Jesus have the kind of peace that Jesus promises. The truth is we are an anxiety riddled world, we worry about many things. The Bible tells us to whom much is given, much is expected, but we live in a world that says to those who have much, you just worry about losing it. As I said a few weeks back, Peace and Joy are inter-related, if one is missing the other one for sure is absent. Why is it when we have so much to be thankful for, when we have been so greatly blessed; that we can still be a people looking for peace in all the wrong places, and always coming up empty of it? Could it be there is a connection between peace and gratitude? Let me be transparent for a moment, the longer I am in ministry the harder it is for me to find pockets of pure peace, places and times that wash over me and leave me feeling our heavenly Fathers peace. This past week I sat in ancient churches and monasteries and could actually feel why escaping to monastery living might be so appealing. But God has not called us to retreat from the world but to go into it in his name. I actually think our pace is the number one reason most of us lack genuine peace. The thing is; we want to have it all, have it on time, have it our way, and have it endlessly fulfill us. The problem is this kind of attitude is killing some of us and for sure is robbing the rest of us of some potential peace. See ya Sunday, I am looking forward to being back among you!

Roughly 12 years ago, shortly after I became a believer, I had my first bible study. We studied the book of Joshua and I was incredibly intimidated to show up that first night. I tried to find reasons not to go. I knew nothing about the bible. I had no idea who Joshua was or even where the Book of Joshua was in the bible. All I knew was a fire had been lit in my soul. I had this deep desire to learn about my creator and His people. I often reflect on that first bible study, and I'm thankful I took that first step.

The Book of Joshua was a wonderful place for someone like me to start. It's filled with armies, battles, kings, and the supernatural....in my opinion, it's a book of the bible made for men. This Sunday, Father's Day, we're going to walk with Joshua and the nation of Israel into the promised land. We're going to look at the character traits that shaped Joshua into becoming such a great warrior for God and such a great ambassador to His people. This weeks hook is brought to you from youth camp, so let me get right to the point. There is great confusion in the Kingdom of God between our sense that we are owed happiness, and the consistency of Joy that should be a natural by-product of our faith in Jesus. Honestly, confusing the two would be like confusing a Gator fan with a Seminole fan, or a Bulls fan with a Knight fan, or a Hurricane fan with anyone else. Seriously, happiness is a temporary emotion, joy is a condition of the heart. Happiness is circumstantial, joy is relational. I think there is a direct correlation between our capacity to sustain God's love and the Joy that leaks out of us. An absence of love for sure will lead to an absence of Joy. Why is it we have such a problem sustaining Joy, maybe it's because we spend so much time chasing happiness. Join us Sunday as we continue to look at a life of shining! If the purpose of Radiant church was to fill the sky with the light of Christ, then Shine is all about being laser focused with our faith. This Sunday we will be looking at the role that "seeking" plays in our ability to shine. I think part of the reason that people struggle with spiritual maturity is that they are not really looking for God. Don't get me wrong they are happy when he shows up, or happy to call on him in a crisis, but actually intentionally seeking him happens less than we probably want to admit. The Bible is very clear, when we seek, we will find. What I know for sure, is this is the one and only life we are ever going to get. We have limited opportunities to be moved, then to move. What we are talking about here is a life of intentionally seeking God the father, trusting in the sacrifice of Jesus the son, and following the movement of the Spirit throughout our entire life. I need to confess right up front that there may be no church related subject that I am more passionate about than "Worship". So consider yourself warned! It's the day we set aside to honor the sabbath and to remember that we are not God, that he alone is worthy of ALL our Praise. Part of my passion is because I know it is critical to maintaining our spiritual integrity; it's fuel for the week, it's grounding against apathy, it's empowerment against sin, it's equipping for the journey. And the truth is Americans are a bit flippant about making it a priority, we lack a sense of urgency. Nowhere in the first century would it have been conceivable for followers to think worship was optional, much less set aside in favor of something better. There wasn't anything they considered better and neither should we! The truth is Radiant Church begins in our sanctuary and then ripples into our community. Every Sunday I enter the pulpit with the thought, what if this is the last time I get to worship or preach on this earth. I mean after all life is fragile and for sure uncertain. So I don't want to leave anything on the table, I don't want to be found coasting into heaven. If we are incapable of worshiping with our whole hearts on Sunday...when and where else would that happen? In many ways Sunday is practice for an eternity of worship. So you will have to forgive me if I am a little bit jacked up Sunday! #Unashamed!

I hope everyone had a chance to either see live or listen to Janice's sermon form this past Sunday, it was truly exceptional. The fact is "Following" and "Calling" are intertwined. People hear the word "Calling" and they immediately think of the person who sells all their stuff and moves to Africa, lives in a hut, boiling your dinner in an open caldron and oh yea sharing the gospel. And there are in fact some who do just this. The truth is we have twisted this concept of "Calling" to only include professional Christians or Zealots. If this is true then Radiance is in the hands of only a few and this I assure you was not the plan Jesus had in mind. When the sermon planning team planned this series and titled this sermon it was originally called, "Find Your Calling". But the more I thought and prayed about it, it hit me; if we are saved by Grace then our calling doesn't need to be found as if we had misplaced it, it's already present we just need to claim it. We need to own it! We need to respond to it! The call has already come! I believe Calling is not optional for a believer in Jesus, it's a command that demands a response. There are only three things you can do in response to those words uttered by Jesus when he said "come follow me"; we either accept it, ignore it, or neglect it. Only one of these things will make you Radiant! So join us Sunday as we continue to look at our calling to be a radiant city on a hill. And also we will celebrate Mothers Day with all the ladies of our church!

Everyone is following something or someone... a political party or politician; a philosophy or ideology; a trend or popular culture; or some just follow their own heart, which could possibly be the most dangerous thing to follow.

Who or what would you say that you are following? As Christians, we should be following Christ, and most of us would say that we are. But how can we know for sure? Jesus says that the world will know we are his followers by our fruit. If we are truly followers of Christ, we should be leaving a trail of evidence in our path. Evidence that points others back to Christ.

Jesus made it clear that following him would not be easy. Following Christ requires a life of obedience to his teachings. We are called to give up our own selfish ambitions and surrender to his purpose for our life - advancing his Kingdom.

But Jesus promises that if we follow him, we will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. If we desire to be a radiant church, one pushing back darkness at every turn, we will need to make certain that we are following Jesus, the Light of the World. For when we follow Jesus, we receive light and we become light; the kind of light that shatters the darkness.

I think we have fairly well established that our Radiance is not just for Sundays or our geographical location. We are to shine as church out there, everywhere our feet tread. But how connected are we to understanding the Kingdom mission? How serious do we take advancing the Kingdom of God. The fact is we live in a world of competing Kingdoms, hundreds of little fiefdoms, and then there is the Kingdom of the world, that acts and operates against the Kingdom of God. How confident are we that we are representing the right Kingdom? I believe if you are not advancing then you are backing up. I think we are called to play offense and playing defense is only to protect our flank. Listen, the enemy is cunning and he will use anything; good things, fun things, tragic things, hurtful things and everything in between to cause us to take our eye off the mission. So what does it mean to advance the Kingdom of God? Well its quite simple, it means we should be repelling darkness. At Georgianna we believe we exist to give ourselves away, as I said last week that our light should be setting someone, or something aflame with the love of Christ. Finally a subject I am an expert on....MASS! The concept of mass creating momentum in church came 15 years ago following my self-description of being a Rhino. The truth is we want to bump into things for Jesus, and the impact is always greater when we crash into things together. There really is power in numbers, unified behind a single mission or vision. It's part of what we committed our year to, which is all of us at least once a month be in the Historic Sanctuary in prayer for the needs of our community and the world. In an age of individualism, and many selfish agendas there is a powerful witness in the "us being one" and moving as one. I think the question I want to answer this Sunday is; momentum for what? Are we clear about what we are trying to do when we say we want to "Be" the church. You see, we aren't just "the" church (location), we are called to "be" the church (mobile, missional, movement). I think this is what separates those vessels that are radiant from the ones whose light is fading away. Being the church in our community, your light with my light, with our neighbors light for the benefit of others to see is what it is all about. Radiant Church:The Clock is Ticking

We are a people who live by the clock, everything has a time, and time keeps moving along no matter what we do. We can't slow it down, we can't speed it up...it just steadily ticks along till our earthly time is done. The fact is we are suffocated by our efforts to get life from sources other than Christ, and this is often why our light dims and fades away. We always think if only we had more time. Or we think I just need to be a better time manager. Or if I could only find balance in life between the many demands. The real issue is we fail to understand how precious time is and by the time we finally get it, we're almost out of it. Why is it the things that matter most in life, come at the expense of the things that mattered least? So let me be clear right up front I am no more qualified to preach on this subject of time, than I am at explaining String Theory. I am an oft confessed, but not cured workaholic! I like work and to be honest I don't always know when to stop. I hate telling people "No" although I am getting better at it. So maybe Sunday is just for me, but my guess is that I am not alone. I think we are a people who remain enslaved to the burden of attempting to make life work by trying harder. How's that working for you? I believe exhaustion, fatigue, and lack of margin directly affect our radiance, it dulls Christ in us. So set some time aside Sunday, to find some time, for a timely message!

Radiant Church: Avoiding Average

This Sunday we begin a new series titled "Radiant Church". This series has been brewing in me for several months now as I continue to live in the shadow of declining and failing churches. The anchor for this series will be Jesus teaching from Matthew 5, calling us to be a light on a hill. Jesus compels us to be a light that draws others to him. So how bright is your light shining? Honestly, I think Georgianna does a great job in this area, however I believe the same could have been said at one time for every dying church out there. There are two things I believe that causes the church to lack Radiance, Jesus coming and removing his lamp stand for disobedience, and secondly when the people of God turn the dimmer down, and the church's influence slowly fades away. I am committed to seeing neither of these things happen to us. This week we will look at cause and effect of being average. We have become a culture that "settles" instead of pursuing excellence. I believe this settling is contagious, and nowhere can it be more attractive than in our spiritual life. Being average is killing the North American church. Listen, I just feel like Jesus deserves our best, that we should be all in, and that we should be turning our light up and then ripping the nob off. To be clear, this is not Pastor-speak...I actually believe this! So for the 8 weeks we are going to pour gasoline on our burning hearts to increase both the light and our passion for Christ.

This Sunday we conclude our "Great Prayers" series on Compassion Sunday. This is the Sunday we all unite together in bringing a one time, sacrificial, annual gift to the church in support of Tabitha's House and our daughters in Haiti. I firmly believe the key to leaving a legacy is to keep what is at stake constantly in front of us. I believe you have to know what matters in this world and recognize the power of your influence for good or evil. Legacy leaving should be a natural response for Christians considering that Christ makes us heirs to the Kingdom, but it seems to be a lost art in our culture today. In a world that is less concerned about issues of eternity and leveraging our life for blessing, the consuming thought is get more, have more, share less. I had a coach ask me once; what is it you want to be remembered for? This is a question that cuts both ways because for sure there are some things we don't want to be remembered for. While I can give lots of answers to the question, I think the number one for me...is I want to be remembered for being generous. Generous with my resources, generous with my time, generous with the gospel, generous with my love, generous with my compassion for others. I simply believe generosity creates the best ripple effect of change in the life of some one else. Jesus prayer in John 17, looks up, then looks around, then looks ahead. The fact is we are gonna leave something behind when we go, after all Jesus did...the question is, what kind of legacy will it be.

Janice did such a nice job laying a foundation for this coming Sunday's sermon. One of the universally felt needs of all humanity is this concept of hope. Uncertainty sets the stage for hopelessness. Thankfully, we who believe Jesus as both Lord and Savior have a clear and certain future. Over the years I have witnessed the evidence of those who go through life hopeless and those who go through life hopeful, and often times the dividing line is Jesus. Hopelessness causes people to sit down in their misery, resigning themselves to their present circumstances. While hopefulness is the anticipation of what is yet to come, that there is something around the corner that compels you forward. As Christians we can be situationally helpless but never hopeless. The God of the Cross is also the same God of the Empty Tomb. Momentary circumstances trumped by Grace and Love. I believe "Faith" creates hope, so where faith is conceived, hope is birthed. I think sometimes we just need a spiritual tune-up, to be reminded that we are a people of Hope. We live in a culture which claims that hope is fleeting, it's because culture is an ever changing whirlwind of chaos. However, God in whom we have put our hope, is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. I find that adversity helps me remember that I wasn't supposed to do this life without God. Join us Sunday as we remember that Hope is the spirit of anticipation, that something better is coming!

Uncertainty. We all can relate. We live in times of uncertainty. At some point in our lives, we all will be faced with a crisis so overwhelming that it feels like a vast army is coming against us. Something will go down that will threaten our protection, our provision or our peace. It's what we do in that moment that will set the stage for the outcome. Will we panic, become paralyzed by fear, self-soothe with harming behaviors, blame God, or deny Him altogether?
Join us Sunday, as we look at one of the Great Prayers of the Bible, offered up by King Jehoshaphat. When faced with a very real and present danger, he humbled himself before God and the entire nation, inquiring of the Lord. His humble and earnest prayer, along with his willingness to worship and praise God even in the thick of his crisis, resulted in God giving victory without the nation ever
having to fight at all.
Life is messy, disappointing, uncertain. The question is, can we bear the uncertainty? Can we bear not knowing how God is going to provide for our most urgent need and still trust that he will?

So it is just way to easy to say "To God Be The Glory." It sounds so spiritual, sounds so sincere...the problem is that I am not sure God is feeling much glory from us. It's always been funny to me, that when we have a good day it's because we are so amazing, but when we have a bad day it's because God doesn't like us. It's like praying for days, weeks, and even months and then God delivers and our first response is...man, I was so lucky. I think living in a secular world, and the bombardment of individualism has taken the shine off God's glory. The end goal of every day should be to glorify God. For thirty years I have asked myself the same three questions every night when I go to sleep. Was God glorified through my life today? Was my wife edified by the way I treated her and stewarded our love? And, did I bless my children today? You see as Christians, I think we constantly need to be thinking about every thought and action with the end in mind. If we are a people called by his name, will God even be glad we of all people are known by his name? I always think when it comes to God, I don't want to embarrass him and I never want to be found ashamed of him. These are the filters that ensure God gets the glory. So whose Glory is it? Well it's God's and the way it unfolds in our life is through our adoration. You see we always adore the things dearest and nearest to our hearts. So what do you adore?

Great Prayers How high and how far

How does our vertical life impact our horizontal life? It seems that God always magnifies those things in my life that I wrestle with as I prepare a sermon. If I am honest, my prayers have been hovering at ground level lately, simple prayers with low expectation. Are our comfortable lives generating comfortable prayers that lack the power to transform? If we are honest, it is easier to insulate ourselves from the pain of this world as we move comfortably through life, than it is to submit ourselves painfully before the Lord . God wants us to pray desperately! Prayer, our vertical relationship with God, spilling out into our everyday lives as we love deeply and serve others. Not serving for our own Glory, but for Christ alone. As Christ followers, we should be fueled by a sense of urgency to pray powerful prayers expecting that light will shine brightly into dark places. How high we reach determines how far our lives ripple out into the world. How High? How Far? Join us Sunday as we stretch toward heaven with great expectations to reach a broken world.

The original title to the sermon was simply "Intercession." But for me, it lacked the enthusiasm of the blessing we get when we stand in the gap for others, be on our knees for others, and to sacrifice for others. The fact is, there are so many examples of intercession in scripture I had a hard time deciding which passage to use. Of course the ultimate intercession happens at the cross when Jesus is punished for our sins. Intercession is all about the exchange, its entering into the pain or world of someone else with their best interest in mind. There is just something about intercession that changes both the giver and the receiver. I personally (and I know some of you do as well) know what it's like to pray for someone by name having never met them. Before very long, you begin to feel like you know them personally. The thing is intercession leads to intimacy of relationships. I believe the church is at its best when it has a "send me" spirit. I truly think we are called to stand in the gap for those who have lost all margin in life, and just need someone to hold the line for them. I think we have a responsibility to advocate in prayer and action for the voiceless majority, which are the children of our world. I think we are to advocate for Jesus, so that we can help repel darkness and help others discover the joy of a new and eternal life found in Christ. Intercession is a big word with limitless applications...but if we won't do this kingdom work, then who will? See Ya Sunday as we look at the continued power of a praying church!

Alright, can I tell you, I HATE Valentines Day. Now you need to know I am not cheap or even have an aversion to spoiling my wife. I just think it is ridiculous to set a single day aside to do what you ought to be doing all the time, which is expressing tangible love to others. Now I get it that without this day there are some who would never receive tangible signs of love, but seriously this absence of felt love seems like even more reason why the world needs Jesus. It's just my opinion that if you have Jesus then "Love" should be leaking out of you all the time and your spouse and children should be in the splash zone. As Christians "love" is what we do. Our Bible is God's love story with creation and if you haven't read the book (spoiler alert) love wins in the end. I think the issue is the world has made Love subjective and not objective. We have made it about feelings and emotions and not about commitment and action. Love as we see it in the world today seems to lack staying power and longevity. So I probably know more than most that we have done dozens of sermons on love over the years, but I am confident we have never looked at it from the view we will Sunday. So I hope you will join us and I also hope that you are loving the people God has placed in your life in a way that they can feel, long before next Wednesday!

Well in twenty years of ministry I have preached the subject of "forgiveness" from every angle and I am not sure anyone ever likes it. I don't usually get a lot of "atta boy" emails the next Monday. The truth is it's not a subject that generally promotes church attendance, and it's not a subject that generates enthusiasm among the faithful. Now if I were to preach on retributional justice for those who have hurt us, well it might just be standing room only. I believe there are some things we all share in common; we have ALL been hurt by others, we have ALL hurt others and ALL of us have sinned against God. It's a crowded boat this forgiveness boat. You see, the Bible teaches comparative forgiveness, the forgiven are expected to forgive...end of story. So how do you pray for some one who has hurt you, when what you want to do is see Old Testament Justice incinerate them? Well I believe you have to go stand at the foot of the cross and face your own shortcomings and sins, then if your heart isn't completely stone you will get it, and the "it" is how much we have been forgiven. At least that is what I do. Not sure Sunday will be an easy day, it for sure won't be as funny and wonderful as Nathans sermon was last week, but I'm gonna preach it anyway. Who knows, it may be the sermon some of us need to hear most. See ya Sunday!

The enthusiasm for our 2018 vision has been overwhelming, and people are excited about being in Gods word and better steering their prayer lives. This Sunday we are going to look at the Lords Prayer, specifically the prayer that Jesus taught when the disciples asked..."Teach Us to Pray"! Its always been interesting to me what the disciples didn't ask Jesus to teach them. They didn't ask him to teach them to heal, or speak in tongues, or cast out demons, or any of the other supernatural cool stuff Jesus was doing every day in their midst. They asked him, to teach them to pray. I have always believed that its not "how" we pray, or "what" we pray, that matters as much as "why" we pray. In the church it always boils down to "why" we do anything. Intentionality about Jesus is always the answer to the "why" questions of our faith. Join us Sunday as we begin walking through the great examples of prayers that we can apply immediately to our everyday life. Prayer Vision 2018

There are many reasons that this is an important day in the life of our church, but the most important is so that we would be united behind a central theme for who Christ is calling us to be as a church. The Bible says "where there is no vision the people perish" and we see examples of this all the time. One of the greatest sources of fragmentation I see in other churches is the fact that they are chasing lots of agendas and are not united by a singular focus. This failure of focus depletes enthusiasm, energy, resources and passion. The end result is that the Kingdom is not advanced, it thus becomes a ministry of running in place, which leaves people unsatisfied and exhausted. This Sunday we will also be placing in your hand a tool to help you in the coming year maintain your spiritual focus. Join us Sunday for what will be an exciting day.

Darkness Has Not Overcome

This Sunday is typically a throw away day in the church calendar. That is what I was told in Seminary. I remember hearing that and thinking, how could this be? The church has pre-decided that no one comes on this last Sunday of the year, so don't put to much into it. Not on my watch! Years ago I decided that I would preach this sermon as a declaration that in the Kingdom of God, where the gospel is proclaimed there are NO throw away days. Georgianna, I believe we live in a world of spiritual warfare, I believe we have a real enemy bent on our destruction, and I believe the darkness cannot overcome us. Gods incarnate invasion that we celebrated last week meant "game on" for our enemy. As we bring 2017 to a close and reflect on the Impact we had and the impacts we missed, I want us to do it with confidence that we are children of light and cannot be defeated. I want us attacking the flipping of the calendar with brazen boldness and prepare for the year to come as people who have already been declared victorious. Can't wait to see you this Sunday as we finish our year together and charge into 2018!

As we look at the Christmas story, there are three different reactions to the birth of Jesus. First, there was the reaction of Herod, the reaction of hatred and hostility. Herod was afraid that this child was going to interfere with his life, his place, his power, his influence, and so his first instinct was to destroy Him. This battle still wages today, and we often see it as a war on Christians, but it is against Jesus himself. We want to do what we like and Christ will not let us.
The second reaction is the reaction of the priests, the innkeeper, and all of Bethlehem. This reaction was one of complete indifference. Their story comes so close to the greatest story on earth and they missed it. The final reaction is that of the wise men, the reaction of adoring worship. They desired to lay at Jesus' feet the noblest gifts they could bring. When we look at the characters in this story, which one are we? I don't think anyone would claim to be Herod, but do we truly go as far as the wise men when it comes to the adoration of our Savior on Christmas? Or do we find that, when we truly look within, we are most like the town of Bethlehem? Are we too wrapped up in ourselves, in the everyday, or even in the Christmas season, to notice what is happening just next door?

So I hinted last Sunday that I refuse to battle culture over who owns Christmas, and quite frankly I think we lost that battle decades ago. I am more interested in us getting it right in our own church and not succumbing to Christmas add-ons, that I think would be unrecognizable to Jesus. So when I hear people talking about wanting to return Christ to CHRISTmas, I need you to know I am more interested in us returning Christ to CHRISTians. I spend most of Advent asking myself is our Christmas recognizable to Jesus for who our reveling is named? Are we conscious about who we are spending our time with and what we are doing with our resources? Essentially, do these activities Glorify the Babe born in the manger or do we do them for some one else or even for ourselves? This is what makes the Shepherds unlikely guests at the "Reveal" party. I can picture the angels working on the invitation list and then Jesus say's, oh yea invite the Shepherds. Then the Angels in shock say...whoa Jesus slow your roll a bit, the Shepherds? Uh, excuse me son of God but have you smelled a shepherd lately, they're not exactly sterile folks. Then I hear Jesus say, "I am the Good Shepherd"...these are my people. Don't exclude them! Join us Sunday as we see how the Shepherds presence in the Inn Crowd, ensure that none of us who have the stench of sin on us are excluded from the benefits of a Savior!

I believe that everyone can be found in the manger scene, its why we called our Advent series the Inn Crowd. We all can be found at the scene of this unlikely way God chooses to save the world. Some are a part of God's family already, like Mary and Joseph. Some are marginalized by culture and circumstances, outsiders to the faith, outcasts from the world, like the Shepherds. Some are seeking, knowing there has to be something more, something deeper, like the Wise Men who come. Some are like the Inn Keeper, who fails to recognize the opportunity in front of him, and makes no room either in his home or his heart for the Christ child. And every Nativity Scene I have ever seen has a Donkey...I hope none of us are the Christmas Donkey. The fact is Joseph is a remarkable man of God and yet he has no lines in the Christmas story. What he does have is unwavering obedience. I think the Kingdom of God is desperately searching for more than a few good men, Godly men, men of integrity and character, men of action, men who are honorable and men who can be trusted with your wife and sister. Increasingly, there seems to be fewer of these men in our world. I rarely do this, but I believe this is one of those sermons that every man in our church should be present to hear. As men, we need to be asking what kind of man am I? What kind of father am I? What kind of husband am I? Who am I modeling my manhood after? I think every young unmarried woman in our church needs to be here to hear it. Because there is a kind of man you should want, and to settle for anything less might just get you less than God desired you to have. The Biblical Simple Christmas is a powerful story, and we are all in it. Sunday we will look at one of the really good guys of faith...Joseph!

This Advent Season as we prepare for the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we will be looking into the lives of a few ordinary people that God used to do extraordinary things. How often do we dismiss our God given attributes and think that we are less than qualified to be humble servants of God to do extraordinary things? In today's fast paced world we so easily lose focus because the road seems too long or too difficult.
God chose Mary, a young, faithful peasant girl to bring the King of Kings into the world. God did not select her because of her social status, rather, he chose her because of her surrendered heart. Mary had to keep her eyes fixed on God each step of the way in order for the age old prophecy to be fulfilled. Join us Sunday as we look into Mary's heart and her journey to the manger. If we will just surrender, I think we will find that we have a little bit of Mary in each of us.

Life Together: Visible Affection

LIFE TOGETHER: VISIBLE AFFECTION
This has been one of the hardest sermons to write. Not because there is not enough Biblical evidence for tangible affection, nor because there isn't a need for this expression of love. No, its because we have so culturally distorted affection and sexualized it till no one feels safe. The abuse and objectification of mostly women and children through out the world has made touch complicated for the church. And to be clear, the "church" has also contributed to this mis-trust. The truth is we know we crave affection, people need the assurance of love that comes when some one reaches out and touches them. The early church was marked by greeting the saints
(each other) with a Holy Kiss. Can you imagine what that would do to Sunday attendance if we made that an expression of our faith in Christ? So, how can we reclaim affection as a sacred part of being the church and doing life together? I'm not sure if we can, but I am sure that affection is important for people to have assurance. As I heard from one of my third graders a year ago...some days you just need a hug. Join us Sunday as we continue to unpack what Life Together should look like.

Life Together: Joy Abounds

The longer I am in ministry the more I am keenly aware that the enemy really does want to come and kill and destroy. I think he would love nothing more than to separate us from our life together with petty quarreling and denominational skirmishes. Lastly he wants to wreck your life and steal your joy. In response I think there is a huge difference between "God with us" and "God in us". The latter is like fire retardant for our soul. When Jesus is "in us" through the Holy Spirit, then he goes everywhere we go. When he is "with us" it implies we can choose to acknowledge or ignore his presence. Jesus "in us" means that his joy in us is untouchable, it cannot be snatched away and it for sure is not circumstantial. I am an extrovert so doing Life-Together is a great source of replenishing joy in my life, the more the merrier. God creates the church and its united community as a vessel for sharing joy, for celebrating and for being reminded that our circumstances, no matter how difficult never have the last word. When I invite people to church, one of the first push backs is that they have been to church before and it is boring ( I am always thankful that Georgianna is not the church they have visited). Church should never be boring!!!!!!! The fact is that simply being rescued from death is plenty of reason to celebrate and to be filled with an expressive and abundant joy. Life Together: Everything is Shared

If you have been here long at all you know that I am a big believer that we are all in this church thing together. As it goes for you and your neighbor, it goes for me, and vice versa. I try very hard to not be an embarrassment to you as I move about our community ( which means I never go to Publix in my stretchy pants). We know that the church exists to give itself away, and so it makes sense that inside the church we would share everything. We see a need and we meet the need, simple stuff...right? I think by and large most Christians are happy to share, that is until it costs them something. Janice did a beautiful job last week of laying a strong foundation for our series "Life Together", and the hallmark of any healthy church doing life-together is in how they share. How they share their hearts, their gifts, their talents, their pain, their victories, and their resources. Scripture tells us when one part of the body hurts, the whole body hurts and when one part of the body is honored, the whole body rejoices. This is what church should look and feel like. The early church thrived because it placed others ahead of their own needs and agenda's. I think this is something we at Georgianna do very well, we are constantly looking for places to share our lives and the gospel. This Sunday we begin a new series called "LIFE TOGETHER". We all have this innate longing to know and to be known. God created us for relationship. Relationship with Himself and with others.
It's the body of Christ doing "life together" that accomplishes God's purposes. When we look at the example of the early church in Acts 2, we see that as a result of these first believers "doing life together," God's mission spread.
God still desires to use the church to spread His good news to the ends of the earth. The church, it's not simply some club or program or gig. It's the body of Christ; home for ALL of humanity. In Christ, everybody is welcome! Not just to a physical building, but to an emotional place of refuge in him.
Everybody is Welcome. It's a "churchy" tag line for sure. Join us this Sunday, as we examine our own hearts to see if it indeed is really true.

Impact: Submission possible

We live in a world where the word "submission" has become a posture to be avoided at all costs. It's seen more as Mission Impossible. The truth is we all submit to things everyday despite our abhorrence of being considered submissive to anything. But the journey of a discipleship begins with the 2 words...follow me. Jesus said them, and because these 12 followed faithfully, well its allowed us to sit in our church each Sunday a living testimony of the legacy of submission. I think Christians who struggle with submitting to Christ reflect the fact that at least in the North American Church we are looking for a Savior and not so much a Lord. I don't meet anyone who doesn't want to be rescued from something, their sin, the consequences of bad choices, the overflow of brokenness in our world, but so few want to submit their lives permanently to the rescuer. They just want to be rescued and released. Some people treat their spiritual lives like buying Holy Life Insurance, the problem is that you never end up making an Impact on your way to heaven. There is nothing Biblical about this approach. The fact is one can not exist without the other, I'm not sure Jesus can be your savior, if Jesus is not also your Lord. Sometimes we have so much going on in our own lives that we don't feel like we are in a good place to IMPACT others. Maybe the reason we are in such a bad place is because of the IMPACT someone else's actions have had on us. This week we will look at one such instance in the life of Paul. We will join the apostle on an ill-fated journey. A journey he warned the captain and crew against taking. We will find that Paul has to suffer through yet another storm that was the consequence of another's actions. Yet Paul is able to use this bad situation for the glory of God. We will look at this passage in depth to discover how Paul was able to make a positive IMPACT on those around him, even as he suffered.

So in full disclosure I think this weeks sermon is going to get personal for most of us. I mean we will be talking about how we talk and who among us hasn't said something that we regretted? I won't retell the story that cost me 50 roses the day before Kyle's 1st birthday that then I had to explain to 80 people at the party...God has a funny sense of humor, and I haven't made that mistake again. I grew up with a Texas colloquialism that said, "never let your mouth overload your backside" (church version). I never understood what it meant, but when I committed this verbal faux pas it affected my backside. The truth is my mouth has, and still does, although less frequently, get me into trouble. I believe there is so much that you can tell about a person simply by the speech they use. Jesus himself said "it wasn't what went into our mouth that made us unclean but what came out of it". Now we live in the twitter age were you can drop a 140 character hand grenade and not have to be there to live in the overflow of the pain it caused. The truth is we all have been hurt by words and hurt others with them. So what if our mouths affect our impact for Jesus? What happens when how we live doesn't line up with what we SAY we believe? Lets face it the mouth is a hornets nest of sin, waiting to be opened and unleashed. Maybe this is why Paul tells us that we need to take captive every thought, before we speak and can't take it back. You do know you can't take it back, once its out there its out there. Impact: Positioning for influence

This Sunday we begin a new series called "Impact". As you recall we dedicated this year to making an Impact, not just corporately as a body but also individually. It was specifically an impact for Jesus in the lives of others. It was a commitment to be intentional about impacting those in our closest circles of influence. I felt like it was good for us to close out the year with this in mind, and see how we have done with our impact. I believe that there is an influence that only you can make. I believe it is specific and has a specific target designated by God with the recipient in mind. The question is; are we making these impacts or missing these opportunities? I also believe that we have to strategically position ourselves to make the greatest difference. I do not believe anyone stumbles into difference making. Making an impact is about leveraging the entirety of our life to create a ripple effect of love and Grace as we move through this world. The question we must answer is are we more concerned with making an impression (It's about me) or making an impact (it's about others), because they for sure are not the same things. Join us Sunday as we unpack the impact we should have, the impact we can have and the impact we are having, whether we realize it or not.

So this Sunday we continue to look at the upside-down, inside-out way that the Jesus Gospel is paradoxical in its approach. I believe the national anthem of Western Christian Narcissism is "O'Lord its hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way". Some of you will be singing this song all day...you're welcome! Be at peace, we are not singing it Sunday. I believe we live in a world grasping for attention, our 15 minutes of fame, we want all the credit and none of the responsibility. We live in a culture where everybody is perfect (cue theme song) and everything is the fault of somebody else. The advent of Twitter has accelerated this prideful, self-grandizing mentality to new lows as people reach to be exalted. The truth is I do not care what you are doing right now, or what you are having for breakfast...life's not all about you! Listen the reason we are like this is because God made us this way. SHUT UP...really? Yep, God made us to be exalted...but not for our personal fame, but for His Glory. God wants to lift you up and leverage your life for him, but it all starts with humility. Join us Sunday as we discover together what true humility looks like and why it is so fleeting.

I think we have had a great summer teaching through Georgianna's Core Values, and I am indebted to the entire preaching and music teams for helping us have such a spirit led summer. This Sunday we begin a 3-part series on the Gospel Paradoxes we find in Jesus. He is the master of inside-out, and upside-down. I mean who says things like Blessed are the poor, the grieving, the meek, the thirsty and the persecuted. If we are honest don't we spend most of our life trying to avoid these things? This Sunday we will talk about how none of us can really be whole until we have been broken. And to no surprise this makes no sense in the world we live in, because again we spend so much time avoiding being broken. And then when we are broken we spend the rest of the time trying to hide it from others. We have a hard time owning our sin, our shortcomings, our faults and so we go into hiding. Sin makes us hiders and it has since Genesis. And for some our denial of this brokenness only leads to us being broken...this goes badly every time. But then Jesus offers something for the vulnerable, for the contrite and for the seeking. Jesus alone has a way for us to be whole, if we will only embrace it. I think this will be a great series to be reminded that we were not made for this world, and so we should not be governed by it's cultural trends and expectations. The Georgianna Way: Commitment to Authenticity

This week we will be concluding the series THE GEORGIANNA WAY talking about Authenticity. We will study this subject by looking at Paul's letter to the Galatians. Paul wrote several letters to the different churches throughout his travels. In most of these letters, he usually begins with a note of thanksgiving and a prayer for them. But here in this letter to the church in Galatia, he basically begins by saying, "Grace and Peace to you. What are you doing?! What are you believing?! You are perverting the Gospel! Whoever is teaching this to you, may he be cursed for all eternity!" He gets right to it. He does not mince words. This is unparalleled seriousness. It was a big deal then, and it is a big deal now, whether or not the church is preaching the authentic gospel. Are we being called to the same commitment that Jesus or Paul called the early Christians to? Have we added or taken anything away from Jesus' gospel? Are we authentic in our love and desire to walk with God? This week, we will look into the gospel that Jesus calls us to and what happens when we, as a church, and as individuals, truly seek him.

The Georgianna Way: Commitment to Stewardship

I think you can blame much of the demise of the North American Christian church on the toxic influence of culture that has penetrated what was meant to be sacred. But not when it comes to this weeks core value...we (The Church) messed this one up on our own. Stewardship is never very hard for me to talk about because quite frankly its the easiest of all of Jesus commands for me to follow. Early in my Christian walk it was impressed on me that the principle of Stewardship applies to everything in the Kingdom of God...I own nothing! Its all on loan...it's a sacred trust! My gifts, my resources, my marriage, my kids, my job, my heart is all a sacred trust. And one day I believe I will have to stand before the Holy God that Nathan described last week and give an account for this trust He placed in me. The church has relegated stewardship to a dollars and cents impetus that we initiate, and missed the Biblical reality that it is ALL God's. The only thing I can control before death is the pre-purchase of my own urn for ashes. And even then it doesn't prevent my boys from selling it on eBay to fund a brothers weekend get-away. I believe we "live to give". I also believe the opportunities that surround us
are as numerous as the stars in the sky!

As we have gone through this series, we have talked about many varying precepts that are a part of our walk with Christ. As humans, we are prone to favor some commitments over others. We tend to observe the ones that we are interested in or have less trouble with and abandon those we don't particularly enjoy. Often I hear people say that they come to church for the sermons but don't particularly enjoy worship. It's "not really their thing." But worship isn't a take it or leave it thing with God. I think this mentality, in part, comes from a lack of understanding of what worship truly is. More importantly, I think it comes from a lack of knowing who God truly is. This week we will discuss WHO we worship and WHY we worship Him.

I am deeply committed to all our core values, in fact I find that if you don't stick to your core values especially when they are challenged then they're probably not core values, but really just hobbies, or ancillary interests. But this week's core value of being outward focused is one of my great passions. After all we built a church around the statement that like Jesus, "we exist to give ourselves away". When I read the Gospels I see Jesus extending himself all over the place, to all kinds of people. Jesus doesn't discriminate with his time or energy. For sure Jesus draws a crowd everywhere he goes, but it is always a by-product of engaging others. I think this is how the church should live, being "other" driven as Jesus was. Somewhere in the last 50 years the church has become "inward-focused", more monastery than missional outpost. This is what I call the "sin of neglect". When we make the church about us, our wants, our desires, our needs...then we neglect the very people Jesus created the church to reach. Jesus was passionate about the M.O.B. (the marginalized, the oppressed, and the broken-hearted). We all at one time or another have been a part of the M.O.B. and have received the benefits of Jesus reaching for us. I believe what defines us as a church is our reach, and I never want us to be found with Alligator Arms. In the gospel of Luke, Jesus tells three stories about lost things that cause similar actions. And when found, a grand celebration took place.
God feels this way about lost people. People who are spiritually lost and separated from Him. And He will pull out all stops in pursuit of them.
But what about us? Sometimes we don't want to get involved, we want to mind our own business. But that is not what Christ has asked of us.
Jesus has commissioned us to go out into the harvest fields and spread the good news of him!

I look forward to being back in the pulpit this Sunday and am so grateful for our great preaching team and the creative ways they have tackled these core values of reflecting Christ through Georgianna. One of the realities of life is that if you are not growing you are dying. This is true physically, and emotionally, but it's especially true spiritually. Over the years I have read the Bible cover to cover numerous times, and always marvel at finding a new truth I had not seen before. I want to ask; "Has it always been there, how did I miss it?". The thing is I am not the same person I was the last time I read it, I have grown, my eyes are more open, my heart is softer as I grow in my faith. I'm not sure I'll get to the end of my life and know everything there is to know in this great book, but I want to know My Lord more and more as I plan to spend eternity with him. This is why being a life long learner in the Kingdom is critical. My whole goal as your Pastor is to point everyone to a person...that person is Jesus! I want us to clear the path and show people the way to the life abundant. Sadly, I see way to many people who are not living intentionally in their spiritual life. They stepped into the kingdom and sat down, and in doing so they short-change the adventure. Spiritual growth is not a fix-it theology, or managing of our sin, or even behavior modification. No, Spiritual growth is about transformation. I do not believe people are projects to be fixed, but faded reflections of a Holy God in need of deposits of love. As a church we want to sow fields of love in the hearts of men and women and then step back and watch them grow. Join us Sunday as we continue our summer of declaring our Christ-centered values!

This week, we will be discussing our Commitment to Creativity.
I know that many will assume that this message is not for them, as you may feel that you don't have a creative bone in your body. Perhaps we feel this way because we have put the idea of creativity into a box and missed the entirety of what it means for us as Christians. Throughout the Bible, God calls men unto Him who are skilled in various ways and then gives them a task to perform. After giving them instruction, He tells them to "do the work just as I have commanded you." If we do the work God has given us to do, and we do it His way, we will find that God can be creative THROUGH us.
This Sunday, we will look at one such instance where a man allowed God to be creative through Him, and we will witness the staggering results that are available to each of us.

The Georgianna Way: Every member a minister

It's a very common thought among church members, that Pastors are the ones who are to do all the ministering. But according to God's plan, as revealed in his Word, ALL believers are ministers. In his letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul instructs the church that Christ has given to all the saints, the ministry of reconciliation. Paul goes on to say that as believers, we have been authorized by Christ to be his ambassadors, making an appeal on his behalf.
The Word of God makes it very clear that ALL the saints have been called into ministry, not just ordained Pastors. The God-ordained purpose of the church is to make Christ known to all the world (the Great Commission). And we can only do this if every member of the body is doing the work that God has prepared in advance for us to do.
Each of us has an equally important role to play in the body of Christ, and when one member fails to do their part, the body suffers. Join us Sunday as we look at how we can glorify God and make him known in this dark world simply by doing what he has instructed us to do, which of course, is the Georgianna Way!

It has been our passion to share the saving grace of Jesus Christ with everyone we know, and everyone we encounter. We believe that everything changes when we experience new life in Christ. This includes our attitudes, our passions, our desires, our influence...everything changes for the better. In fact, Paul tells us we are a "new creation". The old is gone and the new has come, this means that everything changes, not just our eternal destination but everything in between. We live in a culture that is forever trying to change the outside, this is nothing more than image management. God is interested in complete and total transformation not simply a make-over. As Christians we don't live at the cross, we die there and then move onward to living as Christ did. I knew a guy in college who was allergic to deodorant, and so you could smell him coming before he got there. He had lived with it so long he had no idea he stunk. Sin is this way, we live with it so long we have no idea how bad we stink. New life is an opportunity to be cleansed and become the fullest expression of who God created us to be. A commitment to New Life is to be more concerned with what God thinks of us than what others think of us. As a church we are committed to seeing everyone enjoy the blessings of a New Life, then we become little Christ's strategically placed in every domain of society to passionately share what we love with others. Grace...A short one syllable word that is often times misused and misunderstood. Our culture has cheapened it, isolated it from God and has made it all about what we do and do not deserve. But God's grace is none of those things. It's not cheap, separated from God or tied to what we deserve. Simply put, Grace is God's unmerited favor toward us. Favor that we don't deserve and favor that has nothing to do with our human efforts. It is God's free gift to us! Salvation and Faith are the book ends that make Grace so powerful. Who we are in Christ and what we believe hinges upon whether or not we can receive God's grace fully and then extend it to others. What would it look like if everything we did, all the work God has for us to do, was rooted in His grace? It would mean that our world and our lives would undergo a transformation of Biblical proportions all for the Glory of God. Come on Sunday and rest in the fullness of God's Grace!

This Sunday we begin our summer series looking at some of the core values that shape the way we do ministry here at Georgianna. I always love summer as the entire preaching team gets multiple runs at the pulpit. We are blessed to have such a great preaching team and this series will be an opportunity to hear different voices around a common theme. The Georgianna Way of course is to become the fullest expression of Christ both corporately and individually. It is also an intentional act of being authentic and genuine to the gifts we have been given as we pursue the mission to "give ourselves away". This Sunday I want to lay a foundation for this series and remind us all of "why" we do "what" we do, and map out the "way" we do "what" we do. If you are new to Georgianna this will be a great series to help you understand our commitments as we imitate Christ. For the rest of us, it will be a great reminder of the commitments we have made to reflect Christ into a broken world. As a church we always want to be disciplined enough to sustain momentum, but flexible enough to move quickly with the Spirit. We believe that we are blessed to be a blessing and this requires faithful commitment to Christ first, and then unconditional love for our community second. Uncommon Fellowship: Love One Another

Sunday we come to the end of our "Uncommon Fellowship" series and I pray that we have begun to grasp how deep, and wide and long God's love is and that our uncommon united hearts, are a living testimony to a broken world of this extraordinary love. Looking back this series has revealed two things; first of all, we really are not very good at these one-anothers. Secondly, who knew it was going to be so deeply personal to so many. The truth is that I think we were faced with the tension between the Christian we want to be and the Christian we really are. This is made more difficult when confronted with the Biblical expectation for being a disciple. The preaching team will tell you that this theme of "Love" appears 4-5 times a year, mostly because I believe we are still learning how to do it well. We live in the shadow of love definitions that are conditional and find them much more comfortable than God's expectation of unconditional love. So let me ask, what would it take for God or some one else to prove their love to you? What would it take to convince others that we really loved them? The reality is there is an intertwining of Gods love and our love for others, the second is dependent on the first. Otherwise, its only situational or circumstantial love.

Uncommon Fellowship: Carry One Anothers Burdens

Have you ever had a time when you felt so overwhelmed you didn't know where to turn? Maybe these days the better question is have you ever had a time when you weren't feeling overwhelmed? I think one of the great joys of being in ministry or being in a church is that there is always the possibility of mutual support...no one ever has to go it alone, unless they choose to. This is the reason Jesus left us the Holy Spirit (our advocate) so that we would never be alone. So how are we at "Bearing" one another's burdens. I think we are good at "Hearing" one another's burdens, but maybe not so good at "bearing" them. Its amazing the difference one letter makes. I have taught for years that the North American Church is great at "Sympathy" but not so good with "Empathy". In other words the church can be good at feeling sorry for people, willing to pray for people, but not actually helping people. This is not the case here at Georgianna, but I think we have to be on guard against empathy apathy. Now clearly there needs to be some boundaries so that we don't create a co-dependency or fall in the trap of entitlement and for sure we should be healthy spiritually before we jump in to help. But the key is to not assume its always some one else's burden to be carried alone. Join us Sunday as we continue to challenge ourselves to maintain this beautiful Uncommon Fellowship.

Ok lets face it, if people in general were good at this then there would probably be less conflict in our life and in the world. Think about it, ideology has separated North Koreans from South Koreans and we are all living in the splash zone of this inability to simply accept one another. This is why we are doing this series because even as Christians, we are often "uncomfortable" with "uncommon". Of course this means anything that is unlike us is immediately uncommon! So why is it so hard for us to accept one another both inside and outside the Kingdom? I think we confuse acceptance with tolerance and we are never quite sure where truth and accountability fits into "accept one-another". What if we could look at people and look past appearances, and our pre-judgements, and our differences and see the person God sees? What if we could see what they could become as a full reflection of God's image? What if we could see others the way that God saw us...while we were still drowning in our own sin. So Sunday is Mothers Day and it was my Mom who taught me about accepting one-another, that people just want to be loved...so we should love them! Mom's for sure are gifted with this unconditional love, this love that has the ability to look past our mistakes and see the potential inside. Isn't this what God did when he accepted us? So join us Sunday...we are an Uncommon Fellowship working out our common fears and phobia's about one-another together.

Fellowship of Standing with One Another.
To "stand with", means to "unite with someone, as in defense." It's an Uncommon Fellowship because in today's culture, it's more common for people to look out for themselves than for someone else.
But when we become Christ followers, we are bound together in this community of faith. A community of diverse people who all unite together for a common purpose- to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ!
We become a part of a family where we belong to each other, look out for each other and build each other up, despite our differences.

It can be easy and rewarding to stand with someone
when we seem to be making a difference in their life.
But what happens when the situation doesn't seem to be improving? Or when our peace or security or comfort is being threatened by the situation?
Sunday, we will take an intimate look at the story of one faithful woman who chose to stand with someone even when it came at a great cost to her.
When Ruth chooses to cling to her mother-in-law Naomi instead of doing the easier thing, God brings about the most unexpected
and beautiful redemption imaginable.

Have you ever noticed that there is not a "Restore One-Another" committee in churches? Never has anything been so simple conceptually, and so difficult to implement. The truth is we live in a disposable society and relationships have become as easy to discard as Monday morning trash. There are a myriad of reasons that this is a hard ministry in the church and I'll cover some of them on Sunday, but difficulty doesn't excuse us from this Biblical mandate. I think most Christians feel like this is what we hired a Pastor for! Surely this is the work of a professional Christian! And the truth is I work very hard to bring back people who have strayed from their faith, mostly because I know what is at stake if we don't. The thing is most people see me coming, but what if your life and love is what pressed in on them. What if you were the one God needed to pull people back from the abyss? But make no mistake about it, it is hard and often disappointing this work to restore people who drift. I think you would be amazed at how much the Bible has to say about this command and despite all the unity the early church possessed, there were still many who were walking away. Some people believe Jesus demands to much. And they are right in that Jesus demands a great deal, but the transformative by-product of our obedience is incomparable to anything else in the world. Join us Sunday as I preach a sermon I would have loved to have handed to Janice. God is in the restoration business, which means we are in the restoration business.

This may surprise some of you but I have never had anyone come to my office and ask me to help them with their hard-heartedness. It's never happened. In fact even when its brought to peoples attention that the reason for their cynicism, doubts, and negativity is that barnacles have grown on their hearts...denial is usually the response I get. No, not me! People can convince themselves to be justified in having a low mercy meter. This Sunday is "Compassion" Sunday at Georgianna and compassion is the CURE for hard-heartedness. I would argue that its not so much that we are not compassionate, as much as we are situationally compassionate...we want to choose who gets our sacrificial love! Because hard-heartedness is so prevalent in our culture, it can be hard to see it in ourselves. We just know we are not as mean as our neighbor...whoever that is. The bottom line is this; if you have been saved by Grace, and are committed to obediently following Jesus Christ, then the things that break God's heart should break ours. Everywhere I turn I see a need for Jesus in our community and the world. Compassion is the attitude of the heart that drove Jesus to the cross. Compassion is what drives us to be a church that gives itself away as our Savior did. Compassion is doing for one what you wish you could do for everyone. Compassion is the bridge to Haiti and 20 little girls whose future is brighter because we have committed to stand in the gap! I believe compassion should be a way of life, but this weekend we are going to put some traction to it and meet the needs of our daughters. Sunday is going to be a great day!

Beautiful Collision: 3 Tradition & Culture

Here is the Real Deal, I was delighted when I was chosen to preach our sermon this week on Tradition and Culture. If you doubt that God has collided with these two sides of the same coin, then you have not read the Gospels closely. It may be the only sermon all year where it is almost guaranteed that everyone will go home angry. I don't think culture and tradition are evil in and of themselves, just like money isn't evil by itself, but it is what people do with it, or because of it that can make these things contrary to the gospel message. Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus battled tradition. After He ascended, His disciples battled tradition and then culture when they spread their ministry to Rome. Make no mistake, all these men of God were stoned, crucified, and boiled in oil because the message they brought offended the old way of doing things and convicted the new way of doing things. And here we are, thousands of years later fighting that same battle. Or are we? Has it seeped so far in that we can hardly recognize it anymore? This week we will look at how tradition and culture have invaded the modern church, how they have pushed so many churches off the path of truth, and how we can get back on course.

Pastor Zach did a great job of setting the foundation for our "Beautiful Collision" series last Sunday. The preaching team's goal was to help us understand that if we are going to have an "Impact" in the world for Christ, then we need to understand that for us as believers everything starts with God's Beautiful collision with us in creation and in His son Jesus Christ. These divine collisions are truly everywhere, simply because it is the desire of God's heart to intersect with our life, so that we might have beauty from ashes. Did you know there are thirty-one healings by Jesus recorded in the Gospels? Of these twenty-five percent of them (8) are around blindness. Seems like a disproportionate amount of blindness compared to everything else that gets his attention. Could it be there is more to this emphasis than we can see (and there is the point)? You see, we live in a world full of Blindness. There is "Inherited" Blindness that comes from the generational passing on of hate and bigotry. There is "Institutional" Blindness that fails to see anything but the bottom line. There is "Relational" Blindness that prevents us from confronting brokenness and dysfunction. There is "Spiritual" Blindness that prevents us from seeing the Truth of Christ over the traditions we cling to. I would even say in my opinion that Love is not blind, at least "true" love isn't blind. Lust is blind, infatuation is blind, sex is blind, but genuine love always brings things out of the darkness. So is it possible that we are not blinded by the light, but blinded by the Darkness? Jesus comes and collides with our blindness. And here is the deal, the longer you're a Christian the more prone you are to Spiritual Cataracts, a distorted vision that fails to grasp God doing a new thing. You simply fail to see God working all around you. Join us Sunday as we collide with our blindness so that we can fully see!

This Sunday our "Big If" series comes to an end and I think it has been a challenging way to begin the New Year, looking at the crossroads that the word "IF" creates each and every day. So we get the main crux of the matter, that the word "if" is a word of possibilities and consequences. Most people get to this crossroads and choose a path of comfort and convenience, living in fear of "what if the worst happens"? What if something bad happens? What if I get rejected? What if they make fun of me for my faith? What if I get sick on the mission trip? And the biggest fear of all...what if I die? In a matter of speaking we are all already dead...according to the Bible we are dead in our sin! We are the walking Dead!
Maybe the question we ought to be asking is; What if we lived? Lived like we had been saved from death. Lived like we were saints and not sinners. Lived like we were put here for a purpose. Lived to make an IMPACT? What If...this is the question that we all answer in a variety of ways with different confidence levels, based solely on what we have put our confidence in. The answer to the "What If" questions can be found in 3 simple words...Is God Enough? Is God enough for your life? Is God enough for your fear? Is God enough for your failures? Is God enough for your pain? So What's the worst thing that could happen to you...and where is God in the midst of that? Join us Sunday as we bring this challenging series to a close!

How many of you already cringed at the thought of this weeks sermon title? This has the potential to be deeply personal and cause a great deal of anxiety. The truth is, never has anything been less complicated and harder to apply than Biblical Forgiveness. I think we get it intellectually but our hurts and wounds of the past seem to haunt us in our hearts. I am convinced that this is part of the reason Jesus tells us we can't look back and be fit for service in the Kingdom of God. We have to let some things go! I believe Un-forgiveness is a giant boat anchor that both weighs us down and holds us back. But we could be free...if we only would forgive! I think it is fitting that we will deal with this Big IF as we begin our Lenten journey to the Empty Tomb of Easter morning. Sunday will be a great day, the goal is to un-shackle us from the pain of withheld forgiveness and be set free from this toxic poison that is self-induced. I love our church and can't wait to share another Sunday together.

The Big IF: If we could only agree

I think all of us would agree that we live in a time of great cultural division and disunity and it is pounding on the shores of the church all the time. We live in an age of individualism that no longer see's sacrifice for others as a noble endeavor. And yet, this is the very nature of what it means to be a Disciple. If you haven't figured it out yet... I am a UNITY freak. I see division as a tool of the enemy to break and tear apart the local church and families. I have been blessed for many years by my friendship with Titus Green, Sr. Pastor at First Baptist Merritt Island. The rumors of Bromance are real. He is Baptist and I am Methodist, but we have been committed to let our relationship be defined by our mutual love for Jesus and not any denominational nuances. The end result is together we are making an Impact in our community for Christ! Listen, I find that if we can agree on Christ, agree on who he is, agree on what his love looks like, agree to follow him at all costs, then we can find a box for our differences. Again, I am not naive but I do believe that we can do more together united in Christ than any one of us could ever do alone, and God designed it this way. Lastly, I have discovered that we can't begin to fight evil until we are done fighting with each other. And this truth applies to our marriages, our parenting commitments, our vocations and especially our faith! Join us Sunday as we look at this idea of teamwork and unity, remembering our greatest common denominator is Jesus Christ!

THE BIG IF:No if ands or buts

It seems like our lives are filled with enormously big buts...do I have your attention now? In other words we fill our life with hesitations to the very obedience we talked about last week and seems to be an endless stream of excuses about why we can't do something. Understanding the "why" is what leads to saying yes to Jesus. The "why" is everything! The truth is our lives are littered with excuses and I am no exception to this harsh truth. Every excuse is initiated by a confrontation either to the way we are living or to an invitation to do something we would rather not. Shortly there after we are at the crossroads of "IF", and what we choose has consequences. Sunday we want to look at what gets in the way of saying yes to Jesus and also owning our failings, shortcomings, and our sin. This series has been hitting us exactly where we live and has a direct correlation to why we fall short sometimes in making an impact. I believe Sunday will be a chance to again look in the mirror of Christ. I love our church!

The Big IF:If you obey

This is one of the biggest "if's" in all of scripture. Have you ever wondered why submission, and surrender, and obedience are such difficult concepts? Well the sin nature in us rebels against authority of any kind and so we see these terms and concepts as violations of our personal rights. However, once sin is defeated in us our lives now belong to Christ, meaning our lives should be the very witness of surrender and submission. I think Biblical Obedience is always reflected by Love-plus-Trust-plus-Action. I believe obedience initiates faith. I believe obedience is expressed loyalty. Obedience is first and foremost a Lordship issue...and if we are honest, all of us want a Savior, we would just rather not have a Lord. We want to call the shots shots over our rescued life. Listen, you don't have to go to church very long to figure out that disobedience leads to sin. God has a different objective in mind...he wants to lead us through obedience into holiness. I think we need to keep in mind that partial obedience is still disobedience, and yet so many Christians try to live in this place of partial obedience. The Bible has a name for partial obedience...its called Luke Warm, and we know what God says about that (Revelation 3 in case you not sure). Here is the deal, following never happens without obedience, hearing the call of our Lord and getting up and following him, this is an act of obedience. Jesus says IF you love me, then keep my commands...in other words obedience and love are tied together...its the Jesus way! I can't wait to be able to share another Sunday with our church family.

Pursuit of Happiness

There's an old saying that "money can't buy me happiness", but according to a current Country song, "it could buy me a boat."
How often we find ourselves looking for happiness in some THING. Whether it's a boat or a house or a clean-bill-of health.
I know I have certainly been guilty. Even our Founding Fathers, in the Declaration of Independence, guaranteed our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Funny thing though, while they guaranteed our right to life and liberty, when it comes to happiness, they merely guaranteed our right to pursue it.
Perhaps it is because happiness is elusive. It can be pursued, but never caught.
But don't get discouraged, if you are still searching for happiness,
God has something much better to offer. While happiness can be pursued
but never caught, God promises that if we seek HIM, we WILL find him.
And when we find Him, and draw near, we also find Peace,
Contentment, Joy and Supreme Blessedness!
Join us this Sunday, as we discover that the secret to happiness
is really no secret at all.

The Big "IF": As IF
We said last week that "IF is a crossroads word and the direction you take or the choices that you make leads to a ripple effect of consequences both good and bad. The truth is our lives are filled with "What If" moments. We said last Sunday that "Only If" was the language of regret and we generally litter our lives with these missed opportunities. This week I want us to look at the "As If's" of life. I believe "As If" statements are commentaries on confidence and trust. This is a bridge commentary to reflect that something is not true, not possible or will not happen based on another reality. The Bible defines Faith as an "As If" kind of term in that we are certain of something we cannot see. I think "As If" statements are also a Petri dish where the possibility that things can grow exists...it is to trust that things do not have to remain as they seem. Here are a couple of examples; What if we lived and loved, as if Jesus really did die for our sins? What if I loved my spouse as if his/her life depended on it? See where this leads. This Sunday we will apply Jesus to these "As If" moments and trust me I believe these are game changers. As we think about making an impact this coming year, these are the questions that must be settled in our heart.

As we come to a close in our Advent season, we have identified that hope was foretold, hope arrived, hope was opposed and now we will discover how the hope of the promised Messiah will infinitely shine. Throughout our tumultuous journey, the hope we have in Christ will overcome life's obstacles. We just need to understand what are hopes are truly in. Are our hopes in what God has done, what God will do, or are our hopes in God himself and in who He is? As we take one last look at the story of the birth of Jesus the Christ, we may find that these are all one in the same. Our hopes are in the plans of the Lord, known and unknown to us. Once we truly understand where our hopes lie, it will be easier for hope to truly shine in us and through us.

Opposition is exhausting, but opposition is the most common fuel for spiritual growth. Whether it be physical, emotional, mental, and more times than not, spiritual, the Bible portrays opposition at almost every turning of the page. Last week we looked at how the birth of Jesus was foretold for generation upon generation. This Sunday, Hope Arrives! What we hope for is always preceded by anticipation. Anticipation of what is to come. When all that we anticipate does not turn out like we planned, our lives can be left hanging on a wishful thinking kind of hope that is sure to disappoint us. With the birth of Jesus, God's hope entered the world. It was meant to infuse a Godly hope into each of us for all eternity. It was meant to allow us to live in great anticipation for all that God has in store for us. Anticipation filled with hope that is grounded in Jesus can change the world. Hope is not stationary, it flows, it moves. Although, sometimes we miss it! Sometimes we live our lives as if hope has not yet arrived. Hope came to this earth in the simple cry of a baby and it has the power to change the world.

Advent helps us recall the eager anticipation and expected hopefulness of God's people while they waited for God's promise to be fulfilled in the coming Messiah. God had promised from the beginning that He would send a Deliverer, a King who would reign forever from David's throne and break the power of sin and death.
Though God's people continued to immerse themselves in sin, God, through His prophets, continued to give hope to His people by revealing more and more about this promised Messiah.
When God fell silent, the people of Israel prayed and questioned,
"where is this promise", "where is God"?
Some of you may be asking these same questions right now. You've been waiting, you've been praying, and nothing has been changing. But just as God was moving through the silence over 2000 years ago, God is moving through His silence today.

Give It Away: A lifestyle of hospitality

I think it is interesting at how undervalued Hospitality is in the modern church. Quite frankly its something that I think we do really well here, not perfectly, but really pretty darn good. But here is where the church as a whole drops the ball, great hospitality is not a strategy but a lifestyle. We have amazing, and sacrificial Parkers, and Ushers, and Greeters, all who are the first expressers of love on our campus. But the truth is we are all charged with creating a hospitable environment, it is the warmth of all of us that should be attractional. The goal of any Christian should be the fulfillment of the Great Commission, to go and share Jesus. However, if we are not creating a lifestyle of hospitality then we might as well be the "bull-horn" guy standing on the corner shouting spiritual insults at people. Hospitality for the Christian is to happen with every encounter, its an "other" driven emphasis that prioritizes the person in front of us. For sure Jesus is capable of piercing the greatest darkness, but a Gospel that sticks often comes from getting close enough to some one for it to rub off...it's the way Jesus did it most often! This means two things, first we have to have a Gospel heart that is pressing to get love out to others, and second we have to be willing to get close to people in a non-creepy "Christianese" way...to actually share this great love. This is called "relational evangelism" and its what we practice here at Georgianna in everything we do. I believe Hospitality is what makes it possible for us to know who, when and where to give our IT away. In the Christian world, hospitality is not a duty as much as it is a passion...its a heart that says let me serve you! Join us Sunday as we pave the way for giving our IT away!

This Sunday we begin a 3 week series to usher us into advent. We are going to pick up the theme we declared would guide our year, which was to "Give IT Away". The premise is we would all find our IT (that gift, resource or talent) and get it into play in the Kingdom. How are we doing with that? I think one of the struggles we have as believers and followers of Jesus is fully understanding this concept of Biblical stewardship. I think mastering this divine practice is the secret to never being a slave to our stuff. It also allows us to deflect the onslaught of materialism, and the endless consumer pressure that leaves us feeling like we never have enough. One of the great freedoms that Deedie and I enjoy as it relates to stewardship is that you just learn not to hold on too tightly to anything...after all its not ours! We live in a culture where the majority of people act like 4 year-olds who refuse to let go of the lego, screaming "mine, mine, its all mine". Sometimes it's not even that we need the lego, but we're not sure we want anyone else to have it either. If "Simple" Christmas is truly going to be simple and we are going to have the right attitude about thanksgiving ( which is way more than just what's on the menu) then maybe we should start with God's thoughts on stewardship.
